Latomia dei Cappuccini — Attraction in Syracuse

Latomia dei Cappuccini is one of the twelve ancient stone quarries from where the stones for the Syracusean buildings where extracted. It hosted a theatre in the 70s and 80s. Unfortunately it is closed and used as a garbage dumpster.. it is disgraceful to see such bad management of several heritage sites. I certainly agree that the public monuments should not be privatised, but they should not be left decaying either. It is beautiful place to visit. During Greek time in 400 bc this place was created by excavating stones for Greek temple. Later on the same place was used for the prison. Questo sito purtroppo è aperto solo occasionalmente, grazie a volontari e pro loco, mentre il comune non fa nulla per la manutenzione e la fruizione in pieno di questo luogo, per cui la vegetazione se ne sta impossessando e molte parti non sono visitabili. Il luogo è semplicemente affascinante se pensiamo di essere nella città, ma entrandoci sembra si trovarsi in un altro mondo. Qui si intrecciano storie del passato, con l' estrazione delle pietre per le costruzioni, gli interventi fatti dai cappuccini e anche aneddoti legati alla massoneria. All' interno sono presenti due teatri allestiti in tempi recenti e usati pochissimo per motivi di sicurezza. Diventerebbero palcoscenici affascinanti se fossero resi operativi.
