Good feeling after walking in the sun, but the place doesn’t have air conditioned..

Pay 200¥ at the entrance and there’s a smaller Buddha and you can touch this Buddha’s body then touch a part of your body that has been painful somehow and it’s said to be healed..

The Buddha has big ears and big ears in japan are a sign of being rich or lucky.

The mudra showed by the statute is the vitharka mudra, and it’s not a recent concept and you can see japanese using it widely.. interesting to research the origins of this mudra. The statue looks at you using this mudra as if saying “everything is perfect and you just on the place you should be, no worries”

Has some paintings with a visual description of hell that I will update here soon as I search better.

There’s a hand drawn painting of the interior, all in Japanese (check the pictures)

Worth a visit, worth to sit and search if you like of japans history, history of Buddhism or...

Shōhō-ji Temple (正法寺), also known as Kinpōzan Shōhō-ji, is a renowned for housing the Gifu Great Buddha (岐阜大仏, Gifu Daibutsu), one of Japan's three great Buddha statues, alongside those in Nara and Kamakura. Established in 1638, Shōhō-ji Temple joined the Ōbaku school in 1692. In 1790, the 11th head priest, Ichū, initiated the construction of the Great Buddha to protect people from natural disasters. Although Ichū passed away in 1815, his successor, Kohshū, completed the statue in 1832 after 38 years of construction .

The Gifu Great Buddha stands at 13.7 meters tall and is notable for its unique construction method. A central pillar made from ginkgo wood supports a framework of bamboo and clay, which was then covered with Buddhist scriptures, lacquered, and gilded with gold leaf.

Opening Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM daily. Admission Fees:...

I have visited the Gifu Great Buddha several times. What's interesting is many locals don't know it even exists. There is a very interesting history behind the Gifu Great Buddha which was started in 1790 but not completed until the 1830s. There is a small fee to get into the building where the Gifu Great Buddha is. Also with the Great Buddha there are many smaller Buddha statues and many paintings depicting Buddhist ideas of the afterlife. It's within walking distance from Gifu Park so if you take the bus to Gifu Park you can easily walk to the Gifu...
