Iga Ueno is midway between Osaka and Nagoya. The area is famous as a rest stop on the ancient Tokaido road from Kyoto to Tokyo, and as the home of the Iga and Koka Ninja clans. There is main gift shop area, temple, ninja house, demonstration zone and museum, and lastly the Basho Museum, which has the unique shape of the hat that the poet wore.
We took a right on exiting the underground passage, then a left, and walked to the rear entrance of the park. Read moreConstruction on Iga Ueno Castle began in 1585 by the command of Takigawa Katsutoshi. However, the honmaru, or innermost bailey, as well as the tenshu, or donjon, upon which the modern reconstruction was based were built by Katsutoshi's successor, Tsutsui Sadatsugu. Sadatsugu was then succeeded by Tōdō Takatora. Takatora renovated the honmaru, giving it 30 metres (33 yards) high walls. This meant that the walls of the honmaru of Iga Ueno Castle were the tallest of any castle in Japan, a record that still holds. After the threat of rebellion passed, the castle was not seen to be as important as it once was. As a result, the tenshu was not re-built after it was destroyed by high winds in 1612.Because of its beautiful architecture, and floor plan, Iga Ueno Castle is also known as "Hakuho" or "White...
Read moreI visited Iga Ueno Castle (伊賀上野城, Iga Uenojō), originally constructed in the late 16th century and later enlarged, served as the seat of the local lords during the Edo Period (1603-1867). The castle tower was destroyed in a storm less than 50 years later and not rebuilt until 1935 when a local resident provided funding for the tower's reconstruction.
Unlike many other Japanese castles which were reconstructed in the 20th century using concrete, Ueno Castle was rebuilt with wood only, giving it a beautiful, original look and atmosphere both on the inside and outside. The stone walls on the western side of the castle are the tallest in Japan at an impressive 30 meters.
If you like Ninjas next the castle is the impressive Ninja Museum, you cannot miss this adventure in the land...
