Kuga-jinja Shrine — Attraction in Kyoto

In the north of Kitayama street in Kita-ku there is a shrine which has given the name of Omiya street. The place is called Kuga Shrine. The location of this shrine tells the origin of hostorical connection of Omiya and Kamigamo. Kuga Shrine lies about 1 km south of Kamigamo Shrine and built just as if it connects Omiya street and Kyu (= former ) Omiya street. Omiya means "great shrine" ( O = big or great + Miya = shrine ) , and the road name refers to Kuga Shrine.

Kuga Shrine is a subordinate shrine of Kamigamo Shrine. This place enshrines the ujigami of the Kamo family who is ancestral deity of God of Kamiwake in Kamigamo Shrine.( Ujigami is the clan ancestral kami. = He is the grandfather of Kamigamo's main kami. ) 賀茂県主（賀茂氏）の祖神。上賀茂神社祭神の賀茂別雷命（かもわけいかづちのみこと）の祖父にあたり、神武天皇の東征で先導した八咫烏（やたがらす）と同一視される。古代氏族・賀茂族の氏神「賀茂建角身命＝ヤタガラス」をお祀りしています。初代天皇である神武天皇（じんむてんのう）が九州から近畿に東征し、大和を統一した際八咫烏（やたがらす）となって先導した神様。創建は不詳。当社は、賀茂氏が大和から山城に移住するに際して祀った社の1つと見られている。

According to the legend, its Kami ( deity ) is the original kami that descended from Takamagahara ( the High Plain of Heaven ) to Kysushu with a mythical first Emperor called Jinmu, and then guided Jinmu to Yamato in the form of Yata Crow to unite the nation of Yamato. This is why you see the image of crows associated with Kuga Shrine. Records indicate that the shrine was already in existence in 859.

八咫烏（やたがらす、やたのからす）は、日本神話において神武東征（じんむとうせい）の際、高皇産霊尊（タカミムスビ）によって神武天皇のもとに遣わされ、熊野国から大和国への道案内をしたとされるカラス（烏）。一般的に三本足のカラスとして知られ古くよりその姿絵が伝わっている。
