Great experience for anyone interested in traditional Japanese crafts or textiles.
The tour presented some of the artwork made by the company and allows you to see it close up. Our tour guide explained things such as the company's philosophy in taking on both historical recreations and contemporary, innovative art pieces, and the way Japanese aesthetic is applied to it all.
I would highly recommend the weaving experience, which took place after the tour; I did the twill weaving course. As someone who has not used a loom for weaving before, this simple experience imparted a deeper appreciation of how much practice and understanding of the medium it takes to create the artworks on display. In the workshop room, you can also see the tall looms and sets of Jacquard cards used to make more detailed patterns.
After the tour, the guide showed me a video about how the company brings a work from concept to finished textile and the detailed artisanship needed in each stage. I thought this was also very informative and I hope more people get the opportunity to see it.

Read moreToday I went on a tour of the Tatsumura Textiles weaving factory. I did not have any trouble finding it. It was amazing and full of history. In addition to teaching about weaving and obi making, the tour also gave insight into basic concepts of Japanese art and aesthetics and provided a perspective on history and its influence on Japan's art. The obis are of the highest quality and very light. Tatsumura Textiles has many very important clients and even made a shawl that was given to the Pope. The tour is very reasonably priced, and they also offer a reasonably priced weaving experience. I highly recommend this place. (Note added later: The day after I went on the tour of the company, I went back for the weaving experience. I really enjoyed learning how to use the machine and its traditional technique. I would also highly recommend the weaving...
