This was a great unexpected bonus to the aquarium visit as we came across it walking through the park. The planetarium was really well done with an informative and fun animated film about ancient Polynesian marine navigation techniques, which was a whole different angle from any other planetarium I’ve been to and the English translation headset was really handy. The Polynesian marine culture exhibition hall is cool too with well thought out and informative displays. I notice some people say the info is mostly in Japanese but it’s not. If you bother to follow the route upstairs there’s English translation of everything too but the signs next to the boat displays are only in Japanese, so if you want to just quickly look at those it could be slightly improved and that is obviously what those people did. It cost peanuts to enter, I think it was ¥380 total for 2 adults and 2 elementary school kids. It’s very under attended which is surprising but nice for those who do go. I really enjoyed it actually and the kids were super interested.

We went to the oceanic culture museum planetarium on a Thursday in June, and we had an amazing time. It was very quiet, we practically had the museum to ourselves in most areas. There is limited English translations (you can tell the Japanese captions go into more detail than the more brief English translations); however, the museum relies heavily on visual representations and artifacts such that this didn’t impact our experience as visitors to Japan. The planetarium was a lovely surprise - perhaps one of the best planetariums we’ve been to! We saw the show Okinawa’s Beautiful Stars and would highly recommend catching that show or another one if you visit - they run shows fairly frequently. The staff was extremely kind and helpful. Overall, this was a highlight of our stay in Motobu and we’d highly recommend you include on a trip to the area and/or Ocean Expo Park.

This place is very underrated and underpriced. It’s located in the same area as the aquarium so it gets overshadowed. If you only want to visit this place without going through the aquarium, you can do that as well. The entrance fee is only ¥180 for adults and kids are free. If you like history this is a good place to visit. If you’re Pacific Islander, this whole museum is dedicated to the Pacific Islands. There’s a planetarium in there with different showing times. It’s all in Japanese but they give out headphones so you can follow along with a translation in the language of your choice ( they have English, Korean, Chinese etc..). Overall a great experience. Overall a very interesting and great visit.

This is a museum that exhibits and introduces the lives and cultures of people who live on islands mainly in Southeast Asia and Oceania, where the sea is always closely related to their lives. The entrance to the museum is on the first floor, but the ticket office is on the second floor (use the elevator or stairs). The exhibition spaces are located on the second and third floors, but most of the exhibition rooms are in the atrium, so the exhibition space on the third floor is limited compared to the second floor. Even so, the exhibition space itself is very large, and it would take about two hours to fully appreciate all the exhibits. You can learn about the culture that has been passed down from one generation to the next of people living in maritime countries and islands such as the customs, prayers, including not only boats, but also tattoos, and dances. I think this museum is a valuable place to learn about how the people of these islands, with their small land area and limited resources, have managed to develop their wisdom to the present day.

Such a wealth of info! If you’re going to the aquarium without going here you’re missing out! They have the largest amount of info for everything related to the Pacific Islands. It’s an inexpensive museum and you also get to see a planetarium show for free while you’re there. If you’re not a Japanese speaker they offer headsets that will translate the show. The staff are kind and helpful. It’s also a great place to beat the summer heat!

This place was near the big aquarium and was worth going to as well, very informative with a huge collection of artifacts and various sea vessels from history. The planetarium was free with the ¥190 entrance fee, the theatre was very comfortable with reclining seats, they have English audio devices available, the video was about 30min with washrooms close to the entrance of the planetarium.
