伊藤文吉という新潟きっての豪農の別邸だった家。伊藤家は、例えば明治34年では新潟二位の土地持ちであり、豪農というよりは資産家である。

新潟市の外れに、その伊藤家のかつての本家が北方文化博物館のいわば本館としてあり、同じ経営のここが分館と名前が付いている。本館と分館の距離が相当あり、かつ逆っぽくみえるが、背景を知ると納得ではある。

後藤石水という造園家の手になる枯山水の庭園が見事である。若干雑草生え気味なのが気にはなるが。なお、雨が降ると散策は不可になる模様。

知ってる人は知ってる話だが、近くの旧斎藤家別邸や行形亭など含め、古き湊町、商都として繁栄した明治大正あたりの面影を残す一角である。戦争被害が軽微だった筈だが、他の都市以上に文化的遺産に乏しい新潟市においては、観光スポットとして地味だが、中々に味のある貴重なエリアである。

なお、展示物は、この家の最後の住人である會津八一の紹介が中心。ただ、結局何をした人なのか良く分からないし、別邸の説明は何も無い。展示物は一切無視した方が、見方のピントが合う気がする。

なお會津八一は、早稲田の名誉教授で早稲田の博物館の冠名にもなっている。大正、昭和初期に奈良の古寺仏像を題材に歌を残し価値を広め、後の世の世界遺産登録に至る道筋を引いた人である。繰り返しだが、それらは展...
