Read moreåèš³ã¯äžã«â The "Fukuotoko Election" is a gate-opening ritual of a human cannon-run race held for the purpose of wishing people's happiness and selecting a man who brings happiness to people. It starts at 6:00 a.m. on January 10 every year (very cold early morning). As soon as the gate opens, the 108 runners selected by lottery will run as fast as they can toward the main shrine 230 meters from the gate. The person who comes to God FIRST is chosen as the Fukuotoko (the lucky man) of the year. On the course there are two right-angle curves and one sacred tree stands. Runners will be running as fast as they can and turning right angle curves, so if they slip and fall, they will drop out of the race. A sacred tree stands at an angle just beyond the first right-angle curve; no matter how you turn at the first right-angle curve, you must pass through the tree without hitting it or you will be injured and drop out of the race. The second right-angle curve is just before the finish line and is slightly uphill. If runners relax a little because they are right on the finish line, they can fall and ruin a year's worth of effort and luck. To be chosen as a Fukuotoko (a lucky man), you will need all of your luck in the lottery, your legs power, and your luck in the game. Note that women are also allowed to run, but since the race is a one-shot competition, no woman has ever been selected as a lucky winner. Please search "fukuotoko" on YouTube. You can see powerful running videos.
You too can take part in next year's Fukuotoko (a lucky man) running race. Although you'll firstly need to win the lottery to select 108 out of about 3,000 from all over Japan. The race starts at 6:00 a.m., but many runners gather the night before. A lottery will start at midnight to select 108 people from the first 1500 people, but about 3,000 people will arrive. Please imagine 3,000 runners gathered and quietly lined up in front of the church in your town on the cold and dark midnight. In this way, the cold and dark Nishinomiya Shrine area is filled with quiet and strange heat. There is almost no time for runners to sleep that day.

Read moreThe Nishinomiya shrine is known for the headquarters of Ebisu: the god of wealth as the enshrined deity that blesses prosperity. Its main event is the Tokaebisu held on 10th of Jan every year where men run to win the title of Fukuotoko (lucky man). It's a three days event where the surrounding streets are blocked off and stalls are set up around the shrine. During this time, people come to return their old lucky bamboo and get a new one to wish for prosperity in their business. Otherwise, it's an everyday local (but big) shrine.
Also strongly recommend coming by train during the event as the parking lots around the area jack up their hourly rates during Tokaebisu (and they're not any cheaper...
