A very relaxing place to stay. The hotel is perched atop a hill, overlooking a scenic bay. The view from my window was spectacular. The staff were friendly, especially the gentlemen at the door (one of whom I took to be the manager and who spoke very good English). To escape the concrete, tarmac and aluminium of Tokyo, this was an ideal venue for a couple of nights. I just walked about, taking in the greenery and the sea view. The cable car is worth doing - great views from up there. Breakfast (from 7AM, and best to get there promptly) was included and was quite reasonable, with a range of Japanese and Western dishes. Evening meals are rather pricey though (in the ¥4000 to ¥5000 price range) and have to be booked in advance. The town of Shimoda itself is a faded and decaying port, whose claim to fame is that Commodore Perry came ashore there (and there is a very short, historic street, named after him). There seem to be very few restaurants about - and most were shut (it was early April, so off season). I noticed that a couple of places have signs saying that they don't like children - I was alone, but wouldn't want to visit such a misanthropic place anyway.

We (two adults and one 4 years old child) truly enjoyed staying at the Shimoda Tokyu Hotel (We stayed for 5 nights). First, the views from the hotel room (and from the garden, restaurant, and cafe) are absolutely beautiful. Second, the great breakfast buffet. In particular, I enjoyed “kamameshi” (a rice dish cooked in an iron pot, with local & seasonal ingredients, such as “takenoko”) every morning! Third, my daughter (4yrs) enjoyed playing on a nearby beach (Nabetahama; perfect for young kids because it is a quiet, beautiful, and pleasant beach). Fourth, we explored Shimoda, including the floating aquarium, to which one can have a lovely seaside stroll from the hotel. Finally, the staff were very friendly and helpful (e.g., a regular shuttle bus between the station and the hotel; the driver was polite and helpful). Our vacation was relaxing and fun. We’ll definitely come back here❤️

I don’t understand why this hotel was given a good review. There is only one helpful staff who understands the needs of visitors. The rest can barely speak English. It is such an old facility. The room feels like it is from another century. Pls see the photo of the furniture. Perched on a cliff, the hotel is so far from the train station although there are shuttle services, please take note the service from the station ends before 7’pm. That means you have no free transport back to the hotel after your dinner. Having said that, you can only eat at the hotel. The food is rather limited and expensive. The convenience store don’t sell many things. Do come prepared with snacks if you don’t intend to eat at the hotel. I long to go back to Tokyo. It was a painful one-night stay.

Very friendly and welcoming staff since we arrived offering us all the information we ask for and more. The hotel was just reopened after complete renovation end of April. The lobby, rooms, hot springs and restaurant all seems new. We asked for 2 connected rooms and we got them, all rooms have balcony facing the ocean it is breathtaking view. The swimming pool is great but the water was not heated so bit cold end of June. The beach near the hotel was rocking so we went to Tatadohama beach by car which was super clean. The hot springs for ladies and men both they have indoor and outdoor. Tip for Shimoda: check if the swimming pool is open because each hotel is different it is not open around the year even the beach lifeguard only from mid July to end of August.
