Traditional Japanese farmhouses with thatched roofs. Night illumination not to be missed! Snowscapes in winter , changing colours in autumn and blossoms in spring, shirakawago is blessed with all the seasons. Isolated from mainland for long time, ensure to respect this countryside region during visit. Definitely not to be missed if you wish to explore mountain villages near Japanese alps.

I need to bought ticket in advance through klook. 2-3 hours is sufficient to enjoy the whole village. Bring your own food. No halal food here. No bread shop. But there have been coffee shop and ice cream. Don’t forget buy ticket bus return.

Note: As it would seem that the host is not always present in the museum, I recommend calling the number displayed at the entrance and he will rush within the next minute to welcome you!

Anybody interested in the history and culture of the village as well as spending a casual, friendly and learning time, this little Gassho house is a MUST-VISIT!!

The host, Mr. Toshiki, invites you to sit down and watch two video documentaries with him (dubbed in English and subtitled in multiple languages) and freely look around the museum afterwards. It's a great experience because Mr. Toshiki shows a radiant passion for his village and its sericulture, digging deeper into what the videos show while building a very relaxed, humorous atmosphere. He has so much to teach you and he really puts every effort into making your visit worthwhile, bringing you knowledge, good laughs and a really human experience (as well as some delicious hot tea!). It gave me a feeling of friends gathering to have a constructive and learning conversation, and Mr. Toshiki's enthusiasm about the topics he teaches touched me. He doesn't only stop at the surface-level history of the village and sericulture, but goes as far as to depict the whole context of the events over the centuries that led to what made Shirakawago what it is today, so expect some lessons about the history of Japan itself, among other interesting topics!

So please, if you have 1.5 to 2 hours to spare to this little museum, it will give you back your time's worth tenfold in knowledge, wisdom and positive social interactions with the best teacher in Shirakawago! Thank you for your humanity and hard work,...

What a surprising experience to go to this small museum and have Tashiki show me around. Watched 2 videos. An excellent one in English and a 2nd one in Japanese but with explanation by him in English. I learned new things and appreciated his one on one attention, kindness and very good stories. You should go here. Its definitely worth the 500y, especially as he drove me around looking for an open coffee shop and then dropped me at the bus...
