During the reign of Emperor Nintoku (around 377), a villainous tribe called Ryomensukuna rebelled against the Emperor and was wreaking havoc on the people in the mountains of Hida. Naniwa-no-Nekotakefurukuma-no-Mikoto, who received an imperial command from the Shogun to subjugate the tribe, led the Imperial Army into Hida (Nihon Shoki). It is said that the shrine was founded when Takefurukuma-no-Mikoto enshrined the spirit of the former Emperor Ojin and offered prayers for victory in battle in the sacred grounds of Sakurayama.
Later, during the reign of Emperor Shomu (8th century), faith in Hachiman flourished throughout the country, and it is said that in ancient times hundreds of cherry trees competed with each other for flowers, and the temple grounds became even more well-maintained.
During the Taiei era (16th century, Muromachi period), the shrine was granted permission from Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine in Kyoto, but the temple grounds fell into disrepair for a time during the war-torn period.
In 1623, the lord of Takayama, Kanamori Shigeyori, enshrined a divine statue discovered in the Enako River as the Hachiman deity, rebuilt the shrine, and donated land to the shrine. After that, he designated the northern part of Takayama as his parishioners, and dispatched a magistrate to manage the annual festival (Magistrate's Festival).
