Best place in town with not much tourists and great view. If you start from the temple area, there are more than 10 temples and graveyards to view. You can’t really go inside but it’s nice to just see around. On the east side, which is the shiroyama park, it is said to have wild bear and a couple of wildlife but we didn’t spot it during the day. The park is huge, more like a reserved jungly area. There’s no right or wrong direction as all paths in the park is connected to each other.
It takes about 2h to complete the course but if you are short of time, you can go to the temple areas, go back to the cbd area to see the merchants and tourists lanes and go back up to the Shiroyama park, as in between the temples and park there are nothing much to see. Plenty of clean western toilets along the way.

Read more5km walking trail that winds through a slew of temples, quaint residential neighborhoods, and ending in a natural forest reserve with great views over Takayama before heading back into the old town. Great day out amidst serene scenes. A word of warning: the signage posted all along the trail is sometimes confusing, often showing multiple directions. The trail often brings you right through the grounds of various temples. We snapped a picture of the initial map and used that...
Read moreWe went for this promenade in the afternoon and wondered around the beautiful temples and cemeteries - the walks are well indicated and you can walk a bit off path to experience the calm in the hill top woods. Very little tourists and very authentic - we walked around 1h30’ but you can basically stop whenever you want as it is next to the city - we could have also continued for another hour if...
