Tabinoshiori is a peaceful and beautiful café tucked away at the Sakurayama Shrine end of Takayama’s historic old town. The atmosphere is calm and inviting—an ideal spot to take a break and soak in the charm of the area.

It’s run by a lovely and friendly couple who welcomed us with genuine warmth and kindness, making us feel right at home. The menu offers a great variety, and everything we tried was delightful—but the standout for us was the apple pie. Absolutely delicious!

Shiori is wonderful. All of her locally sourced, organic foods are made on site by her and her husband, Yuki-san. She buys green coffee beans and roasts them on site, then uses old fashioned espresso makers to make exceptional espresso drinks. This is not fast food. Maybe if you prefer MacDonalds you should go there. Imagine spending at least an hour here, examining her books, studying her traditional Shinto garden, talking with her, and slowing down. We had lunch in this beautiful cafe and it was delicious. The platter of the day and apple tart looked amazing, and tasted so also. The interior of the cafe is a perfect mix of old and new and has lovely views to the street or to a rear garden. The owners/staff are really friendly and helped my husband speak a little Japanese as he’s learning, they were so kind and patient. Would highly recommend this...
