If the castle still existed -- it was demolished in the late 1600's -- it could well be a solid 5 star experience. Even some real ruins to clamber over would be nice. As it is, there is nothing much there but the stony foundations, and little enough of that as well. Make the walk for the wood sand exercise, not for the existent castle as shown in the Google entry here. BTW, I was there in 2007 and there were no bear warnings. If there bruins a-wandering now, you must a-wander...

This is definitely more of a mini hike and chance to enjoy nature and see the surroundings. We didn't do any research so I wasn't expected to hike uphill so much after tasting 10 different sake... but you know, that was my mistake... hahaha. I still enjoyed the beautiful forest. We didn't really see any ruins- most of the castle was completely destroyed. But it's still a nice place. Make sure to bring bug spray if you plan to sit or chill a while - the mosquitos...

This quaint clearing atop a small hill is quite delightful…….until you begin to be eaten alive by insects. I could barely enjoy the scenery for 10 seconds before being constantly swarmed. I’ve been to many many parks and gardens in Japan and never have I encountered so many pests!

Also, if you are coming here to see ruins you will be sorely disappointed. They should really call this place the “Takayama Castle Former Site” as that...

It can be reached by foot only with lots of steps to climb, the path was not paved with stone or concrete and can be muddy after the rain. My legs were tired after climbing there. Not recommended for seniors with disability and small children. Not so great view of the city as most views were obscured by trees. So not great for photography. Pretty much like walking in the woods for good air and exercise.

Even though it was winter, the walk was enjoyable. Although there wasn't much to see, the mountains and ancient stone wall provided a beautiful view. Despite the abundance of snow, I found pleasure in strolling through the forest. There, we unexpectedly encountered two remarkable creatures - Japanese serows. These creatures were big and looked like fat big goats.
