Wonderful experience touching wild life in forest. It's located just 300-meter from old town. You can go in side of Shinmei parking lot 50-meter East from red bridge and walk up narrow slope to mountain. Then arrive at the ring trail entrance. Go counter clock wise route into the forest. It's two-kiro-meter or 40-minutes beautiful walk hideaway from crowded noise. The roof coverd bench with toilet located middle of the route called Kin-ryu-gaoka. Wild birds and squirrels picked up penuts from your hand there. Antelope natural monument family also live there. All wild animals are careflly protected by locals walk around there for their health eveyday. They talk with you "O-ha-yo-u go-zai-masu" or Good morning with smile friendly all the time. This experience is one of the best memories in your...
Read moreWe drove to Shiroyama Park where we could take in the views of Takayama town. It’s a good thing that it’s winter and the trees were bare making it easier to see the beautiful panoramic view of Takayama town and the distant mountains. It is the site of the ruins of Takayama Castle and there is a statue of Nagachika Kanamori (founder of Takayama castle) in the centre of the park. Shoren-ji Temple is just a short walk away and its multiple small tori gates reminds me of Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari Shrine. I read that the Shorenji was originally built in Shirakawa-gô, a village north of Takayama. The main hall, built of wood from a single giant cedar in 1504, traveled through the area in 1960 when the temple was moved to be saved...

You can get a panoramic view of the city though as you climb up. We saw a sign warning of bears displayed near the peak and freaked out when we saw a blackish animal. We talked briefly with a local lady and it turns out it's a Japanese Serow we saw 😂 thankfully she clarified it with the picture we took or we would have gone around boasting how we...
