Takanoyu — Hotel in Takayama

Had the most wonderful time staying here! Hiroto-san was so welcoming and kind, the room was gorgeous. Falling asleep to the sound of the canal water was so soothing. The sento experience also cannot be missed. I'm a bit of a nervous person when it comes to the concept of a public bathhouse, but as soon as I got in there I felt so relaxed and rejuvenated. The 43 degree bath was a bit hot for me, but adored switching from the cold bath to the warmer bath (41 degrees). There was also an Epsom bath outside which was good for tired muscles. I have been in over 100 natural onsen in Japan, but this was my first sento, and one of my top 3 bath experiences EVER! Lovely lovely lovely place and people ❤. The wood fired sauna, the warm outdoor epsom salt bath, the friendly old neighborhood ladies, the chimney scenting the air with fragrant wood smoke, the cold plunge, the adorable little animal diorama in the locker room, the neighborhood-grown produce for sale at the reception. A very quaint tattoo friendly onsen with a sauna in takayama. The staff is quite friendly and it's nice to chill in the lobby after a bath. There's 2 inside baths who are both quite hot (41 and 43 degrees) so if that's not your thing go to the outside ones (one cold one and one hot but okay one).
