As a place to catch trains I acknowledge that there are trains here, so I can't justify dropping it below three stars, but it's still a terrible station. Spread out all over the place, including vertically, with exits that are hard to find and I almost never manage to get on the right platform the first time. Some platforms even have different trains depending on which part of a long platform you're standing on. Useless signs (regardless of which language you prefer) and bad directions, even when you ask for help from the staff. My Japanese isn't that bad, but gawd save you if you're a tourist trying to figure out this place. If you have to change trains in this station you better add 30 minutes padding to your trip. I should add a disclaimer that commuters must get used to it.

If you are heading to nikko, best to book tobu limited express online days in advance for the time you want. I came the day of and my preferred time was full but luckily there was a next train with a few seats left. I traveled solo so it wasn’t a problem for me but bigger groups might have trouble if you are visiting nikko spontaneously.
Go down to the platform and walk to the kiosks to buy tickets. There are language options. It is only one way, cannot buy round trip here. My visa didn’t work so I used cash.
