Statue of Liberty (Statue de la Liberte)

(From the English Language plaque) Statue originally named: Liberty Enlightening the World. To commemorate the “Year of France in Japan” (1998-1999), the “Statue of Liberty” installed on the Île aux Cygnes [Isle of the Swans] in the middle of the River Seine in Paris in 1889 was relocated to this pedestal in Odaiba Marine Park from April 1998 to January of the following year. In its 109th year installed on the Île aux Cygnes, the statue departed Paris, crossing the ocean to be displayed overseas for the first time. The graceful form of the statue located on the island of Odaiba with Rainbow Bridge in the background was adored by many as a symbol of friendship between Japan and France and calls for a replica of the statue to be erected grew stronger as its return to France drew near. As a result of such developments, mainly through the efforts of Fuji Television and the Tokyo Waterfront City Association's committee for the installation of two statues representing liberty, plans were drawn up to create an exact replica of the original statue, and a request was submitted to the City of Paris in March 1999, and started work to obtain a mold of the “Statue of Liberty.” September 1999 - Creation of the replica commenced using the same bronze casting method as the original statue at Fonderie de Coubertin (Foundry of Coubertin) on the grounds of Château de Coubertin located on the outskirts of Paris. October 2000 – Exact replica completed December 22, 2000 – Odaiba's Statue of Liberty, enlightening the world in a new century, unveiled Made possible by: “Year of France in Japan” Executive Committee (ARAFJ), City of Paris, Embassy of France in Japan [and] Tokyo Metropolitan Government History of the statue of Liberty In 1876, the French government gave a special present to New York City in celebration of the centennial of the founding of the United States of America. The present of the world famous “Statue of Liberty,” which stands at the entrance to New York Harbor. It was designed by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1934-1904). In return, an organization made up of American expatriates residing in Paris gave France the “Statue of Liberty” replica, which stands in Paris to mark the centennial of the French Revolution. Under the concepts of “Liberty Enlightening the World,” the statue's original title, and “liberty is an ideal crucial to bringing different people of the world together,” the statue was officially unveiled on the Île aux Cygnes [Isle of the Swans] in the River Seine in Paris with the artist Bartholdi in attendance on November 5, 1889.

(observations) "The original statue was chained. When Bartholdi created the first models, the statue’s hands were holding broken chains to signify the end of slavery. American financiers were not too keen on the idea, so Bartholdi replaced the chains with a tablet. Bartholdi, however, left broken chains at the feet of Lady Liberty to remind us of the freedom from oppression and servitude. These chains are unseen by visitors [in New York] as they sit atop the pedestal, however, they can be seen from an...

The Statue of Liberty replica in Odaiba is a charming and unexpected sight, blending a touch of New York with the vibrant atmosphere of Tokyo. Situated on Odaiba’s waterfront, this scaled-down version of the iconic American monument offers a unique photo opportunity with a stunning backdrop of Tokyo Bay and the iconic Rainbow Bridge.

Although much smaller than its counterpart in New York, this statue is beautifully detailed and symbolic. Originally installed as part of a French-Japanese friendship celebration in 1998, the replica became so popular that it was reinstalled permanently. It stands as a reminder of the cultural exchange and shared ideals of liberty and equality.

The location is especially picturesque, with the surrounding area offering plenty to explore. The combination of the Statue of Liberty, the shimmering waters of the bay, and the modern skyline of Odaiba creates a unique blend of urban and international aesthetics. Sunset is an ideal time to visit, as the lighting enhances the atmosphere and offers great opportunities for photography.

Nearby attractions include DiverCity Tokyo Plaza, Aqua City Odaiba, and Decks Tokyo Beach, making this statue a convenient stop during a day of sightseeing and shopping. For those taking a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, the statue is a pleasant surprise and adds a touch of global flavor to the experience.

While the Odaiba Statue of Liberty may not be as grand as the original, it’s a fun and memorable spot to visit, especially if you enjoy discovering unexpected cultural landmarks in Tokyo. It’s a must-see for anyone exploring Odaiba’s eclectic mix of...
