Tamagawa Sengen shrine is said to have been built eight hundred years ago. When Minamoto no Yoritomo went to battle, his wife, Masako, worried about him, went looking for him, but was forced to abandon her journey due to a wounded foot. She decided to get treatment close to Tamagawa river and visited Sengen Shrine to pray for eternal luck on the battlefield for her husband. She then built the statue of a bodhisattva called Fuji Sengen Daibosatsu Bodhisattva by the villagers and was long respected and worshiped. This became the origin of Tamagawa Sengen Shrine. Four hundred years later, in 1652, at the time of construction of the pass to Sengen Shrine, the Chinese copper statue of Daibosatsu Bodhisattva was excavated under the 9th station of Mt. Fuji. It was cleaned at the Tamagawa River and enshrined. Since then, the Tamagawa Sengen Shrine holds an annual ritual to celebrate it.

The Tamagawa Sengen-jinja Shrine is a very beautiful and very ancient shrine dating from the 11th century. Everything you read here is true, including the warning that one might get pregnant from ringing the bell at the shrine. Pro-tip: Go there a bit before sunrise on a clear day, and bring your camera. The sun emerging from behind Mt. Fuji can be spectacular. Bring a jacket, it can get a bit chilly before the sun is up.

Sengen Shrine is a beautifully preserved, must-see landmark in the Tamagawa area. Overlooking the Maruko Bridge, you can see Mt. Fuji on clear days. The shrine itself offers a full range of ceremonial services for life events. In the summer you can enjoy the annual fireworks display from the concrete open space adjacent to the main grounds. #tamagawa

It’s beautiful shrine with a view of Musashikosugi skyline 🏙 & Mt. Fuji 🗻 Shinkansen tracks, Metro lines & Tamagawa river can be seen too. Surrounded in the peaceful neighborhood. Slope is not so inclined. Highly recommended to come here in the evening to catch a glimpse of night view. Parking facility available in the shrine!

Tamagawa Sengen Jinja is situated on a hill by the Tamagawa River. The shrine enshrines the deity of Mt. Fuji, Sengen. The hill the temple is built on is considered a Fuji-zuka (a surrogate Mt. Fuji). The shrine is accessed by two flights of stairs. A pair of trees joined with a sacred tsuna are used for omikuji tying.
