Togoshi Hachiman Shrine — Attraction in Tokyo

I first came across this lovely little shrine while exploring Togoshi Ginza shopping strip. It is a little out of the way, but is a quiet serene space in the middle of bustling Tokyo, with plenty of chairs to rest, relax and reflect. The shrine itself is nearly 500 years old and will be celebrating its birthday soon.

I first met Kaori-san there, one of the miko of the shrine. She is very friendly and was always happy to take time to have a chat, and is the main reason I have visited Togoshi Hachiman shrine multiple times over the last couple of years while on holiday. I also had the chance to meet some of the regular worshippers, and they were all very kind and welcoming.

戸越八幡を訪れたのは全くの偶然でした。 蛇窪神社に興味がわいた私は、蛇窪神社の白蛇が一時的に避難していた戸越公園を訪れるとともに、蛇窪神社の創設の由来になった厳正寺を参拝しようとしていたのです。

偶然ではありますが、行ってよかった神社でした。 まず、戸越の名前の由来が分かります。

江戸越へて　清水の上の成就庵 ねがいの糸の　とけぬ日はなし

と、八幡宮出現由来記　寛永20年(1643年)未年刊行

とあり、江戸を越える村というので、この名が生まれ、トゴエと呼ばれたそうです。

境内は背の高い木が多く、神木のケンポナシは、品川区指定天然記念物で、二ホンミツバチが巣を作っています。 とにかく手水屋も神楽殿もにぎやかで、良いところでした。 惜しむらくは、社殿が修築中で姿が見られなかったことですが、特に惜しくはありません。

さて、ご由緒としては以下の通りです。 『当社は、御柏原天皇の御世、大永6年(1526)8月15日、村内藪清水の池中より(別当寺だった隣接する行慶寺の裏側にある池だそうです)出現した御新造を、行永法師が草庵に奉安して、山城国(京都府)石清水男山八幡宮の御分霊を勧請して倶に祀ったのが創立の起源と伝えられている。

寛永刊行の木版本によれば、この「成就庵は、昔、俗称一本杉の字名のある藪清水の池を控えた庵であった。大永年間に行永法師が諸国行脚をした時にこの庵に立ち寄り、折からの十五夜の月を眺め、時を移しうたた寝した時、夢の中で輝く光が藪清水の池から放たれているのを見たことから、池の中を探し、誉田別命(応神天皇・八幡大神)の御神体の出現を見たので、慎み戴いて草庵に安置奉った。すると近隣の人々はもとより、往来の諸人も諸祈願を乞い願う者が多くなり、『一つとして成就せずと云うことなし』と云われる程になった事から、この草案を清水の上の成就庵という」と記されている。 元禄元年(1688年)12月15日に宮居を村内の高台にあたる現在の地に遷し、末社に、春日社、稲荷社を建立した。 (中略) 現社殿は欅造入母屋造銅版瓦葺屋根で安政2年(1855年)創建され、震災、戦災にも免れ、都内でも古い木造の建物である。』
