Tokyo Daibutsu — Attraction in Tokyo

I’ve been coming here with my family for more than 20 years. It’s a special treasure of our neighborhood, and I am somewhat grateful that more people don’t know about it. New Year’s Day is can be a long wait. This last time we were disappointed that there weren’t any vendors selling food stalls in the parking lot as we are used to seeing. We left hungry, but happy as always to see our buddy the Buddha. I tend to forget it is a tourist attraction as to me it is my local temple; but yes, it is well worth a visit. In a way Tokyo Daibutsu is one of the forgotten Buddhas. Many Tokyo residents have never heard of it. The grounds of Jorenji Temple include a small, but beautiful, carp pond. There is a soba restaurant nearby. There is a folklore museum nearby in a park with a fishing pond, and if you climb up the steps to the park above you will find a great place for a picnic under the cherry trees, and further pack there is an orchard...

【 2021/07/17(土)訪問 】 東京大仏 乗蓮寺(じょうれんじ)は浄土宗の寺院で、山号は「赤塚山(せきちょうさん)」、御本尊は阿弥陀如来(あみだにょらい)。阿弥陀様は人々を苦しみのない世界に救いとるために「極楽」を作った仏様です。

室町時代の応永年間(1394-1427)に、草深い板橋の一角、山中村(現在の板橋区仲町)に創建したのが乗蓮寺の始まりで、その後、安土桃山時代末期から江戸時代初期頃までに中山道の板橋宿仲宿(中宿)に移転したと伝えられています。 当初は「弧雲山慶學院(けいがくいん)乗蓮寺」と称していましたが、後に「慶學山花岳院乗蓮寺」となりました。

天正19年(1591)11月には家康より10石の朱印地(しゅいんち→将軍の朱印状によって神社・寺院の領地として安堵された土地のこと)を与えられ、その後も歴代の将軍から朱印地が与えられ、格式ある寺院となりました。 8代将軍：吉宗(よしむね)が鷹狩りの途中に参拝、雨宿りをしたのが縁となり、後に将軍の休息「御膳所」に指定されました。

首都高速道路の建設と国道17号の拡張に合わせて、昭和46年(1971)より7年の歳月を費やして現在地(武蔵千葉氏の居城だった赤塚城二の丸跡)への移転が完了し、山号も「赤塚山(せきちょうさん)」と改称しました。

東京大空襲や関東大震災といった戦災や災害が二度と起きないようにという思いを込めて建立された大仏は、昭和52年(1977)4月11日に開眼されました。 高さ13m(頭部3m) 、重さ32トンの東京大仏は、「座像で青銅製の鋳造大仏」という条件に於いては完成当時、東大寺の「奈良の大仏」、高徳院の「鎌倉の大仏」に次いで3番目の大きさでした。

※ちなみに、茨城県牛久市にある「牛久大仏(うしくだいぶつ)」は高さ120mの立像で、1992年(平成4年)に完成したそうです。なんと、大仏の中にエレベーター🛗があるそうです❗️😱💦

巨大な大仏の他、本堂、山門、鐘楼(しょうろう)、福寿観音、閻魔堂(えんまどう)などの見所があり、池には鯉やカモ🦆が居ました❗️

東京大仏 乗蓮寺の開門時間は9:00 、最終入門15:45 、完全閉門16:00です。 アクセスは、都営三田線「西高島平駅」より徒歩🚶‍♀️約20分で、東武東上線「下赤塚駅」からも同じくらい(徒歩約20分)でした🚶‍♀️ 運動不足の自分にとっては😅💦とても良い運動になりましたが、体力(足腰)に自信の無い方は、東武東上線「成増駅」からバス🚌で行かれるのが良いのではないかと思われます❗️
