I’ve been coming here with my family for more than 20 years. It’s a special treasure of our neighborhood, and I am somewhat grateful that more people don’t know about it. New Year’s Day is can be a long wait. This last time we were disappointed that there weren’t any vendors selling food stalls in the parking lot as we are used to seeing. We left hungry, but happy as always to see our buddy the Buddha. When I speak with others who are from the Tokyo area, most say they never knew that there is Japan’s third largest Buddhist statue right here in our humble hood. If you haven’t come to see it yet, I highly recommend it. The nearby Botanical Gardens also beautiful, especially in the fall and spring.

I tend to forget it is a tourist attraction as to me it is my local temple; but yes, it is well worth a visit. In a way Tokyo Daibutsu is one of the forgotten Buddhas. Many Tokyo residents have never heard of it. The grounds of Jorenji Temple include a small, but beautiful, carp pond. There is a soba restaurant nearby. There is a folklore museum nearby in a park with a fishing pond, and if you climb up the steps to the park above you will find a great place for a picnic under the cherry trees, and further pack there is an orchard of plum trees.

I love this small temple. There are no large tourist crowds, and it's peaceful. They close early, but it's a must-see if you are in Itabashi and are interested in visiting temples. It would take less than an hour to see everything-maybe 30 minutes, but it's next to the botanical garden. And walking distance to the castle ruins and the drippy waterfall.

Nice temple with a beautiful garden, and a huge black Buddha statue, a dragon shrine, and some other statues. It was a surprise to discover it when exiting from the botanical garden because it doesn't have the word "temple" in Google maps and foreigners have no idea what Daibutsu is. See the pictures:

Peaceful temple in Idabashi. Rather unfortunate that it does not get alot of visitors given that its far from central Tokyo. The surrounding temple, gardens, and koi pond we all very beautiful! You can even feed the fish in the koi pond!
