This old tea house traditional garden once owned by the Iwashita family of Mitsubishi fame is really worth a visit if you happen to be near Kokubunji station on the Chuo Line. Despite the board at the entrance advising visitors to register online for a visit you can easily fill in a paper chit application in front of the tiny ticket office. I visited on September 23rd, 2021 (a National Holiday) and there were very few visitors : maybe if it is more crowded you would indeed have to pre-register. The garden surrounds a beautiful small lake with a waterfall, below a large open plan rest house. Huge bamboo grove and well kept grounds make for a most enjoyable time. And during the week that is a perfect place where you will enjoy pure green, a micro fall and pond with a small isle. You can walk all around the pond and enjoy the different view, especially from the top of the ill where you will find a small tea house where to rest and enjoy the pond at the bottom. I recommend to visit it and walk to the Musashino site. (Remains of a temple and Pagoda with a small museum along a small stream..) during your visit so will definitely come for...
Read moreJust a few minutes from the south exit of Kokubunji Station, this garden was once part of a country retreat belonging to the Iwasaki family. They were instrumental in creating modern Tokyo. There are beautiful lawns, rare plants and flowers, small bamboo grove, and a series of ponds. The maple trees at the very end of November to first weeks of December are beautiful, but the only time of the year it actually gets crowded.
