Tanjung Aru Beach 2 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, is a popular destination known for its stunning sunsets, often ranked among the best in the world. However, it tends to get overcrowded during dusk, and cleanliness remains a significant issue, with litter scattered around and murky waters near the shore. Despite these challenges, visitors can rent paddleboards for a memorable sunset experience or explore the food stalls and beach bars that offer delicious local cuisine. Facilities such as parking (RM2), public toilets, and a playground are available, but there are issues with maintenance, including poor road conditions, clogged drains, and a lack of running water in toilets. Additionally, the toilets and changing rooms close very early, often before 5 PM, leaving visitors without a proper place to clean up after spending time at the beach.
As a local, I often bring my kids whenever possible, but I am disappointed that proper maintenance and attention are still lacking despite the beach’s popularity. During our last visit, we were unable to clean ourselves because the facilities had already closed. We had to go to a less crowded area, use mineral water to wash off, and change into dry clothes while using a sarong for privacy —an experience that was quite unpleasant. Fortunately, our home was nearby, so we had to abandon our pre-planned schedule and head straight back home to clean ourselves. This was one of our worst experiences at the beach. Tanjung Aru Beach 2 remains a lively spot for both families and tourists, but improved maintenance, extended facility hours, and better cleanliness are necessary to enhance the overall experience for visitors.
