Malayan Pewter, Selangor Pewter Malaya, Selangor Pewter Malaysia, Selangor Pewter, Royal Selangor Pewter - The evolution and history of what is today famously known as Royal Selangor is just some of the takeaways you will come to be familiar with after completing the guided tour at the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre. Tucked away in the suburbs of Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, this venue effecfively simultaneously achieves being a museum, a manufacturing factory, an exhibition centre and souvenir shop.

The interior is very well kept (including bathrooms) and our guided tour experience (which I highly recommend) led by the impressive Ravi left us with a deeper awareness of Royal Selangor's rich history and a great deal of appreciation for the level of craftsmanship that goes into their pewter products; the vast majority are molded and created by hand. Swing by on weekdays to see more of the factory in action.

With parking fees skyrocketing in shopping malls and crowd levels returning to pre-pandemic times, the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre is a fantastic alternative for both tourists and locals alike. The guided tour (or self guided if you prefer) and parking is free and the cafe inside serves up good food at reasonable prices.

Growing up in the 90s, the Royal Selangor brand was synonymous with pricey goods and the pride of the nation. Fast forward to today and upon spending time at the souvenir shop, you can definitely find many practical items at various price points. Pop culture based pewter such as Marvel, Harry Potter, Disney, Star Wars and others are definitely worth checking out while sister companies Comyns and Selberan cater to more upscale clientele.

As with most companies, I can't imagine how badly Royal Selangor was impacted by the pandemic and I hope they're able to find their feet again. With almost 150 years of history to their name, I hope this family owned business can still thrive and uphold their quality over time. This visitor center is a good way to showcase the best of Malaysia and exceeded my expectations. I'd easily recommend checking...

We paid a visit to Royal Selangor today and unfortunately, it was managed poorly for our preschool children which was consist of children ages 4 to 6 years old. Royal Selangor is a pewter product making factory that allow us to have pewter products such as jewelry, teapots, plates and other products. Unfortunately, our tour guide fail to mention these important facts and did not mention much of "pewter" at all.

It was obvious that their staff was not properly trained in handling the tours as they were just rushing through it and did not make it engaging enough for the children to explore. I mean if you know you will be receiving over 100 plus students for the visit, I believe it would be smarter to have ready made pewter products in a corner somewhere that these children can really hold and observe and learn the use of pewter.

The workshop was also quite messy as they didn't explain the steps well to these young children. All they said was to start at the side and the kids started knocking. At the end of it, some just bring home a "flat, nothing pewter product".

As we arrived at 9am plus, the coordinator told us that we were late and started to divide our kids as she see fit (when our schedule clearly states that the activities starts at 9.30am). Even decided for us who gets to go toilet first and made our 4 years old wait for toilet until one of them peed her pants.

Finally, we were promised to have 100plus drink in pewter cup upon arrival but they kept emphasizing "but it is VERY COLD" until all the teachers were scared to give the kids. This makes me believe that they were really not prepared to provide us with the drink as promised.

The upside to the visit was actually the prior planning with Mr Hafiz as the communication was clear and in order. Unfortunately he was on leave which I guess leads to the chaos of today.

Thank you Royal Selangor, really hope you are able to train your staff better to provide better service for all the local and foreign visitors...

We visited The Royal Selangor Visitor Centre on our final day in Kuala Lumpur, and it was an awesome way to finish our holiday. The modern visitor centre is easy to reach from public transport, and they also offer a pre-booked shuttle service too. We booked on to a variety of activities during our visit, so we ended up doing the museum and tour, The Foundry workshop, The School of Hard Knocks and lunch!

The museum itself was a treasure trove of history - with Pewter being right at the heart of Kuala Lumpur's history. The beautifully curated exhibits walked us through the evolution of pewter, showcasing stunning antique pieces alongside modern creations. The tour went into the factory itself where you could see the workers crafting amazing creations. It was very impressive, as a majority of the items they make are still handmade. My only comment on the tour of the museum did feel very fast-paced, so we asked to go around again to take it all in at our own time.

The real highlight of our visit however was definitely The Foundry workshop. Getting to create our own pewter pieces was a great experience. The instructors were incredibly helpful and encouraging, guiding us through the process of pouring, moulding, and shaping the pewter. You get to choose some of your favourite creations to take home, including keychains, necklace pendants and anything else you 'tried' to create!

We also did The School of Hard Knocks after lunch, which involved you ‘banging out’ a bowl from a flat piece of Pewter. It was good fun but quite short, so if you want my recommendation, The Foundry workshop is definitely the best.

We stopped for lunch, which was very good quality and very reasonably priced too. The staff were all very friendly during our visit, and the facilities were all modern and clean. Overall, we had an amazing half day experience at The Royal Selangor Visitor Centre, and I would wholeheartedly recommend a visit here if you’re in...

Love the well curated tour by Joyce. The tour is free by the way. You can just walk in for the tour and it is definitely a kid friendly tour. We were informed on the historical facts over the mining industry and the establishment of the Royal Selangor. Then we also got to know some scientific facts about the pewter. The science section was fun and got few hands on activities and photo spot. Then we were brought up to the factory. We were briefed on the process, casting, polishing, buffing..we also got to try to do some design using the hammer which is not easy at all Next we paid RM180 for a session at the foundry workshop incl of lunch. This workshop not suitable for kids esp during the casting part as we will be working with melted pewter. Alternatively can sign up for activity at School of Hard Knock, where you will shape a piece of pewter flat into a small bowl. The cost should be around RM65 per pax, not sure whether same price for kids or not. The workshop was fun. The instructor, Azree thought us the basic and then let us freely worked with the melted pewters. Using cast is easy, but to design freehand is otherwise. Hahaha. We were thought how to polish and buff our creations before finally we turn them either into locket or key chain. Each pax can bring back up to 3 creations, either 3 from the mould or 2 mould product plus one own freehand product. And on top of that we got an alphabet keychain too. After lunch, we took photos with the largest pewter tankard nearby the lobby. Overall it was enjoyable experience and a good activity for the family. As for us this is somehow like a continuation chapter after our visit to the Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No 5 early this year.
