About 4.5 hours drive straight south of Cancun along the border of Belize. This small city of 175,000 on the Maya Riviera is very underrated by tourists, which is good. You won't find white sandy beaches, prices in American $ or $300 a night hotels, but it's affordable living for expats escaping the winter. The winter months are sunny and hot. During the day the Melecon is quiet. But at night there is a street festival along the Melecon (ocean sidewalk). Great cheap street food, rides for kids and artisans. Very family friendly. Read moreOnce you get over the blueberry milk colored water of the bay due to what I am guessing is a white clay soil mixed with Caribbean blue water, this is a nice walk. Lota of restarauants and bars, great murals and statues, and history here. All state agencies are here as well as the governor's mansion for QROO. There is always a small kids type carnival here with food vendors. This is also where you will find the ferry to San Pedro Belize. Although a very safe area, it does have an eerie feel late at night on some side streets, however I have never had any issues in this town other than with a few police wanting propenas (tips).
