I came here mid April during COVID. There were a lot of tourists but it wasn't swarming with people as other folks were saying. This is such a beautiful place. I would highly recommend it. Lodging is only slightly more expensive than other spots in Quintana Roo but that makes sense because it's an island and you have to take a boat to get here. The prices of the restaurants are still pretty cheap considering the clientele (5$ drinks, 10$ meals). Since the sand bar goes out so far, it makes the water beautiful shade of blue green and the water is so so calm. You can watch the sunsets from this beach and it is absolutely breathtaking. There is also sea moss here that washes on shore but that is like that all along the peninsula. I've never been anywhere like here, and the combo of the clouds, sunset, and water looked like it was painted with such vivid, saturated colors. Please come with respect for the locals and for the environment. Conscious tourism is something we should all strive for, especially because we are guests on this island. It is so easy for places like this to be destroyed if people move without...

I absolutely loved this island. We walked so much to get to both ends of the island but it was fun, the water was clear the first 3 days we were here, but our last 2 the the water was a little dirty because it had rained at night. I didn't mind it, nature is nature and no 1 star review here is going to change that, it's no one's fault. Also, before you travel to any island Google when is the best time to visit, but take into consideration that depending on that time you choose there might not be certain activities available.

The island is peaceful, there is something for everyone, we stayed at an adult only hotel and I loved it. Not far from us there were clubs for the younger crowd and that was fine with me.

All in all, if you just want to lay on the beach, enjoy getting in the ocean and just plain relax...

pros: lots of tidal marine life to observe like starfish, snails, crabs and fish

cons: shores are overflowing with smelly sea weed (May) lots of things bite you in the water annoying to access since it’s all beach bars lined up advertised (to me at least) as “dream beach” which it is arguably not to enter the sea you must first cross a gross mixture of smelly seaweed and muddy water where you might sink in a little

things to note: water is very shallow (50 cm after walking 100m) take water shoes if you are easily grossed out you can ignore the beach bars and just head through them to the beach and find a free spot beach is subject to tides, you may want to inform yourself if you care. difference is about 30-40cm finding shade is a little difficult if you don’t use a beach...

Holbox is a Shitbox. I was there when it was raining and the streets were so flooded and muddy you had a hard time walking around some of the water. The ocean was not clear and there was literally huge piles of seaweed all over the beach and piled along the road. This island is over developed and the resorts and local government do very little to fix the streets and clean up the seaweed and garbage along the roads and streets which would make this a much more appealing place. And don’t say oh this is just Mexico you have to accept the way it is because this isn’t just Mexico, this is an over developed under maintained tourist trap that is mostly college age kids. It’s a poor mans Tulum. I can imagine that 20 to 30 years ago this place was probably amazing but it looks tired and run into the ground.
