This was one of two reasons why I made the trip to Chignauhuapan. Without a doubt it was well worth the trip! I arrived shortly after opening at 11, to the airy and open space, and the tour guide quickly started a tour with me and 3 other guests. I am beginner level Spanish, but was able to understand much of the tour and ask questions of my own. Logistics aside, the axolotl were quite amazing to see. They are endangered, exist only in Mexico, and Chignauhuapan is one of three locations where they're known to be found in the wild. There were many in tanks throughout the museum. Lovely specimens in yellow, albino, black and leopard. The guide was very patient with all of our questions, and allowed us to take photographs (no flash of course).
Since this visit I'm even more amazed at these wonderful creatures and even more determined to spread the word about them. Not only is this a museum, it is a conservation initiative. With continued education and support, they hope to expand knowledge of axolotyls and to lift them out of endangerment. Be sure to have a drink in the cafe, and peruse the beautiful offerings in the gallery...
Read moreAriel, the museum manager, was awesome! He speaks excellent English, which is what I needed, since my Spanish is inadequate for understanding the details about the most fascinating Axolote. He had a good variety of these amazing creatures and was very knowledgeable about them. I was also touched by how much he truly cares for these endangered animals. In addition to getting a wonderful, personalized tour of the various aquariums, I was treated to a really fun orgami session, where his friend Gregorio led the activity of making our own little paper Axolotes! Finally, he has a wonderful little shop where you can purchase very unique, hand-crafted Axolotes. The whole experience was charming and wonderful...the highlight of my time in...
Read moreSmall museum close to the central plaza at Chignahuapan but a great collection of axolotls of all types and colours and ages. It was a revelation that they can live for 16 years! The entry fee of 30 per adult and 25 per child was very reasonable. One gets a guided tour through the exhibit of 9 tanks , we got lucky to get an English speaking guide. Apart from this, the museum has some old pictures of Chignahuapan, some artifacts from the last century, a cafe and a souvenir shop. Highly recommended to pay a bisit if passing through...
