Pros and cons for this museum.
It is free, and is housed in a beautiful old building. If you just need to get off the busy streets, this is a beautiful quiet refuge. They have Baños. They have small rotating exhibits with some interesting pieces.
There is currently an exhibit of the sculptures of artist Jorge Marín, which is interesting and kind of trippy. I think it goes till mid March. It is very small. This could also be a pro, as you could enjoy it less than an hour. Their website is not very well maintained, so it was difficult to find much information there. I was excited to see they were having a Leonardo da Vinci exposition. While this does exist, it does so only in name. It is a collection of primarily paintings from Mexican artists. No works from da Vinci. There were a few dozen very nice paintings of various styles. There is what I believe to be a permanent collection, on the first floor of colonial era portraits, paintings and textiles. In addition to being free (there's not even a donation box and I have never been in any museum in any city without a donation box), it has a varied and interesting collection and is housed in an impressive architectural building which in itself is a work of art. Formerly the Augustinian monastery, the building is spacious and comfortable.
