Amsterdam University College — Attraction in Amsterdam

Worst admission procedure I have ever been through. I applied in January 2021 and only got a response six months later. In the meantime, the school did not sufficiently inform me and other applicants on the status of our application. In the end, I only received the final decision on my application one week before the start of the semester. Unfortunately, I was not the only applicant treated in this unacceptable fashion.

Another issue me and other applicants faced was an unwillingness to answer and address basic questions send via email. In some cases my emails were even completely ignored. And if you are lucky and finally receive an answer the original question was often not properly answer. For example, I asked the AUC admissions office about the math requirements for German students whether they mean an average of 11 points in all semesters + the Abiturprüfung or if they mean the grade in the Abiturprüfung. I am still waiting for an answer to this day.

To me it seemed that the whole admission procedure leaked structure and clear guidelines. For instance, at what point applicants can assume to get a response on their application. Moving from one country to the other in the span of two is just not possible!

If you’re looking for an overall high standard of professors, this is a great school to attend. Most of the teachers are highly passionate about what they’re teaching and the intimate class sizes promote a strong and discussion based learning space. Communication with administrative faculty is however a complete nightmare. They lack giving response and action to any complaints, regardless of their urgency, and they would rather have you solve the problem yourself than doing their job and try to help you the best they can. They don’t deliver response by their own set deadlines and overall don’t seem to care about their students. They have a lot to learn from North American universities when it comes to communicating properly with both prospective and arguably more importantly current students. Considering we pay double the tuition in comparison to other Dutch universities you would expect a higher level of concern and care about any complaints that can and should be easily avoided. AUC is een opleiding met gemotiveerde docenten, die in hun vakgebied tot de betere behoren. Er wordt lesgegeven in kleinere groepen en inherent aan het concept is er de mogelijkheid om vakken te combineren uit meerdere disciplines zolang de vereiste voorkennis maar opgedaan is. Dit gaat over de kolommen heen: science, humanities en social sciences. De wijze van lesgeven is afgestemd op het profiel van de studenten; dit zijn meestal studenten met een aangetoond vermogen om snel kennis en vaardigheden eigen te maken. Een ander pluspunt - zeker in Amsterdam - is de (verplichte maar ook aanwezige en betaalbare) huisvesting via DUWO direct naast het gebouw. De huisvesting is ruim en is meestal een zelfstandige unit per persoon. Een parkeergelegenheid voor een auto kan tegen beperkte kosten gehuurd worden.

Een tweetal zorgpunten zijn er wel, die vreemd genoeg niet of beperkt in de Keuzegids Universiteiten meewegen.

Grootste struikelpunt is de administratieve organisatie. Die bleek bij start van de studie al matig qua inhoud en proces, maar is blijkbaar in de afgelopen drie jaar tijd niet merkbaar verbetert. Basically heeft dit organisatie-onderdeel problemen vergelijkbaar met de problemen rond Schiphol. De diplomaregistratie duurde aan het einde van schooljaar 2021/2022 ruim vier maanden tot ruim in het nieuwe schooljaar, waardoor de aansluiting met vervolgopleidingen foutging. Dit is naar verluid niet anektdotisch, maar een terugkerend probleem, zoals blijkt uit andere reviews. Echter, anders dan bij Schiphol wijzen VU, UvA en AUC naar elkaar, maar niemand binnen AUC of elders neemt verantwoordelijkheid om de ontstane problemen op te lossen. Leerling draait zelf op voor de significante financiele gevolgen, maar mist ook een carrierejaar. Goede nieuws is dat voor zover bekend de voormalige CEO van Schiphol hier niet bij betrokken was; deze was ook bij de start nog actief bij Schiphol ;-). Mogelijkerwijs speelt hier wel hetzelfde probleem als bij Schiphol: 60-70% van de studenten is afkomstig van buiten Nederland en zal niet erg gemotiveerd zijn om via een klachtenprocedure proberen de kwaliteit van het onderwijsproces te verbeteren na vertrek en zelfs daarvoor nog terug te keren naar Nederland. Een manier om hiermee om te gaan is het bewustzijn dat de administratieve organisatie inhoudelijk en procesmatig zwak overkomt; door kort op de bal te zitten kan gevolgschade voorkomen worden.

Een ander aandachtspunt is het college-concept. De huisvesting is goed en verzorgd, maar de sociale interactie is beperkt. Dit zal ongetwijfeld ook samenhangen met de selectiecriteria, maar het hoeft voor nieuwe studenten geen probleem te zijn. Sociale interactie is ook buiten AUC in Amsterdam goed te vinden: er zijn talrijke studenten(sport)faciliteiten en studieverenigingen.
