Schutterspark — Attraction in Brunssum

This park was planted by miners, around the time of the Dutch State Mines in Brunssum. Its a park that was made for relaxation and social purposes. In its beginning days it had two restaurant/café buildings, these days only 'Schuttershuske' remains of these two - and there is one can also buy drink and snacks at the playground and boating area.

It used to have rowboats on the lake and a gondola lift over it, those disappeared many years ago and now much remains of it except some empty space. The rowboats stayed until about 12 years ago and then disappeared, after which the current harbor with electric boats was built. These boats are fun for kids, until perhaps 10 years old. It has a terrace where you can drink and buy a snack on a sunny day. Sells canned beer.

The petting zoo is but shadow of its former glory, the entrance fee is not expensive, about a €1 per child. However the petting zoo doesn't look very well kept.

The same goes for the playground - which used to be one of the nicest ones in the region for decades - now many of the constructions have fallen into disrepair.

There are also a few historical sights. There is a dumping sight of medieval pottery industry in the stream. An old defensive 'ditch' called 'De Landgraaf'. An several remnants of the Mining history and water purification... with huge industrial pumps scattered around the park.

In general the active part of the park is well kept and looks relatively neat, but definitely could look better. The roads are hardened with asphalt so taking a strolller or someone in a wheelchair is possible.

Der Schutterspark lädt zum Flanieren und Piknicken ein. Ein See mit schön gestalteten, geplegten Elektrobooten bietet Kindern großen Spaß, ist allerdings nicht günstig. Gerade für Familien mit jüngeren Kindern ist der Park interessant. Ein großer Spielplatz (für Kinder gegen eine geringe Gebühr), ein kleines Tiergehege, eine Kletterbrücke, eine Mini-Eisenbahn (wird leider nur sporadisch tageweise in Betrieb genommern) und einige andere Sehenswürdigkeiten sorgen in dem in ein Waldgelände eingefügtes Spazierwegenetz für Abwechlung. Das "Schuttershuiske" ist eine Brasserie mit Außengastronomie und gemütlich, aber auch eine Imbissbude auf dem Kinderspielplatz und ein Getränkekiosk am Boots-See bieten Erfrischungen und Snacks. Ruheplätze mit Tischen und Bänken sind ausreichend vorhanden.. Zur Zeit wird der Park um ein weiteres Angebot erweitert (Stand: August 2013). Insgesamt schöne Anlage für einen gemütlichen Ausflug mit der Familie. Übrigens werden auf dem Gelände auch Events veranstaltet, so zum Beispiel ein Trödelmarkt. Die Veröffentlichung der Termine scheinen jedoch nur auf lokalen Aushängen stattzufinden. Nice place for running, fishing, playing some ball games. Very, very good facilities for kids but opened from April to October. Admission fee 1.5 Euro/kid. Animals park - only domestic animals. Kids can interact with the animals. Superb lake and a a hill very good for hiking enthusiasts. The only downside is although car access is reserved only for emergency services there are always some trespassers entering with SUVs...
