Walk or jog from pond to pond to explore the corners in the banks that tell the history. In the 17th century, this is where the city’s defensive walls and canals were dug. In the late 19th century, people found that the time had come for something new and an English landscape-style park was laid out on the former town ramparts. The canals were transformed into ponds.

The Noorderplantsoen park developed from a sand ridge into a town rampart and distinguished garden to a venue for people of all ages to gather and enjoy art and culture.

Whenever the weather allows, students spend their time lounging on the grass at the pond banks and young families enjoy the playground. There is also a café/restaurant that sells any refreshments you might need and in late August, the park always functions as the backdrop for Noorderzon, a grand festival with plenty of theatre, dance and musical performances.

Though with current covid times, it is unsure if this festival will...

This is the nearest park located near the city centre in Groningen. Perfect for playing games in sports, hanging out with friends and family, having a picnic, or even just going for a walk or jog. Plenty of dogs around if you fancy socialising your dog or just taking them for a walk as well. There is ample green space, with enough areas for kids, families, dog walkers, plus a dedicated cafeteria to grab the odd coffee or reasonably priced snack. There is a lovely lake with swans and ducks, and there are plenty of benches, tables, deckchairs and grassy patches to just sit down and watch the world go bye that are scattered...

Noorderplantsoen is my favorite park. You can find me on the basketball court atleast once a week. The people there are awesome, open minded and willing to speak with you. Also the rest of the park is peacefull. Every now and then there are some activities in the park like Noorderzon which is a festival that takes place every year in august. You have two main places for children to play. Also there are two basketball courts. But the one at the intersection is the main one. In the summer a lot of people show up in the park. For me noorderplantsoen is my backyard. Maybe we will meet in the...

Given you want to play it safe, I do not recommend going to Noorderplansoen while Corona is still raging and killing thousands of people. It's massively overcrowded with groups of people, who don't seem to care much about keeping a safe distance - something that is hard to do even for those adhering to keep 1.5m distance to others. One of the first places that you must visit in GRONINGEN. Ideal choice for everyone want to enjoy nature , walks around the park with their dog , bike, have a coffee or even excersise . Very close to the city center with easy access with a car (there are free or paid parking sport at the sounding streets) or even better on a bike. Top!
