I first want to thank the previous reviewers for getting my interest up in this museum. As a hypnotherapist, I, of course, am interested in anything of the mind, which I consider to be everything in our human experience. This museum has done such an amazing job of putting things together. As was suggested by some of the previous reviewers, I didn't book online, and I showed up early, like 11am to give myself ample time to get it through. The exhibits are not overwhelmingly a lot. The place, though very interesting, is not even huge. What is an integral part is the multi-media device they give you. You can listen in as in any other museum. Furthermore, on the device, you can watch clips of videos, do quizzes etc. It's all beautifully orchestrated. I spent 4.30 hours there, including a lunch break right there in the cafe. A very enjoyable experience.

This was a very informative and interesting visit to an incredibly historic building. This museum (in a building near 700 years old) covers the history of psychology and it’s associated illnesses and treatments over the years (from the medieval times, through the plague and up to the time of Freud and today). The focus is on meeting individuals who have suffered from mental illness, how they live and how many have learned to use their unique condition to create art and harness talent. It's not necessary to book in advance, however you may wish to do so if you want an English tour. Most information is in Dutch only right now (most of the interactive features) however they have plenty of written information in English. Give yourself about 2 hours to enjoy.

This is one of my favourite museums ever!! So informative so interesting! Is a must go when in the Netherlands, 10 min away from the station of Haarlem also!! Have I photographed the whole place? Seems like it, but definitely not!! So so much more to see in the visit!! I went at 11 and took me 4 hours, with one of the guided tours, to finish! There are many types of guide that can be chosen, I advise you to first scroll to all as some tell just about some of the arts, some tell about them all!! I was advised to use the highlights one but ended up using the full one explaining everything in the museum+ had some extra video to understand better!! I loved it so much I can't wait to go back again!! And to visit the Amsterdam location too!!

Museum: 2 Stars | Café: 4 Stars (see below) Museum: It surely is a great, interesting and fun museum - IF you're a Dutch person or able to read Dutch. If not, than the experience is, even for the cheap entrance price, kinda.... Yeah.... The complete museum is in Dutch. You'll get a guide however, it's even provided in different languages, but it's really confusing most of the time. You have no orientation, you don't know what in the guide belongs where and what to do with the information. Also, the museum offers some interactive features but they are just in Dutch as well. Café: The Café, however, is definitely WORTH a visit! It's cosy, regional, and bright. The Latte was perfect, the tea was organic but not the very best... BUT the Apple Pie I ate, which is also recommended on their website, was absolutely delicious! Try it, trust me! You can, of course, visit the Café without...
