Edited with photos. Another day trip in the north of Holland, perfect for families with young kids. You could start with the steam train. It takes around an hour and a quarter. The trip is enjoyable because you could see all the lovely places and the green areas in this part of Holland. The train stops and you can go to the toilet and take photos in one of the vintage stations. All the trains are classic with lots of charm. Then, you arrive to a coastal place, you have some 20 min waiting time (or more if you go for a different time schedule) and you could go to the steam boat. The same story: great views and nice experience. In that region, it is cold. Even if you go in a sunny summery day, it is not a bad idea to take a light jacket with you. When the boat moves, it gets windy and Cold. The boat trip is less than an hour. No worries about getting sick, since it is a ferry that hardly waves or moves to the point you feel sick. And then the last stop is the zuiderzee museum. It is an open air museum, in which the theme is a fishing village. Netherlands always does great with these open air museums. You could buy smoked mackerel cooked at the fire camp, you could buy an ice cream, visit all the houses and enjoy the views. You can see it in a couple of hours if you stop and allow kids to play. Then, you have to buy a train ticket at the regular train station to go back to your starting point of the adventure. This regular train ticket is not included in the day package of the steam train/ boat and museum, but it is little money. All in all, it is a great plan to do with kids. I highly recommend to go with the museum card (it is free or almost for free). Otherwise it is pricey. You better reserve tickets upfront. If you want to enjoy the whole itinerary and experience, my advisr is to get up early and take the first steam train in the morning. Normally we choose this itinerary: Hoorn (steam train) - Medemblik (steam boat) - Enkhuizen (zuiderzee museum) - back to Horn by...
Read moreNice museum about the old steam-trams. While I liked the ride in the old tram and the part of the museum with the timeline through the years, I didn't like the website and incorrect opening hours. I found the website where I could buy tickets to be very confusing, I think it would've been clearer with a map of some kind next to each different ticket option. Because we had to wait a bit before entering, we didn't have enough time to also visit the workshop (where more old trams are kept) before the tram-ride. I thought this would be okay, since the openings hours on Google Maps indicated the museum is open until 17h and we would be back just after 16h. When we came back at about 16.30h however, the museum was closed. Seeing as this was a vacation and I'm not paying the full (tram-ride) price for just the workshop, it seems I missed out on all the old trams and cool info in the workshop. On the upside, the tram-ride through the different villages, including a stop at a rebuilt 1800-ish (?) station and a highway crossing (snelweg en provinciale weg) were very nice to experience, as well as the boat-trip over the IJsselmeer. Even the NS-train back to where we started got us some new experiences, seeing as my dad hadn't ridden a train in a bit and was very surprised at how silent these...
Read moreBig thanks to all people who work for this project! Very friendly and helpful stuff. I only expected that it will be just a train ride.. But it was a whole entertainment! All those.. actors dressed in retro clothes and uniform, old Citroën from 1953, nicely decorated station in Twisk and not to forget beautiful farms and landscapes, great weather - that was all details which made our trip sooo wonderful and unforgettable! Everything is so good organized: we bought an option with train ride from Hoorn to Medemblik, then we had an hour in the last station (to discover beautiful old center and yacht harbor) Then boat trip from Medemblik to Zuiderzeemuseum and we spent the rest of the day there. It’s all convenient with times, place of departure and arrival. There is map with tour details and places to see, you can order lunch or just drinks (while the stop pause in Twisk in the train, or on a boat, or then in museum) First we had purchased tickets for certain day in August but due to train failure from Amsterdam to Hoorn for few hours we were not able to come.. Big thanks to all employees who helped us with rescheduling our trip and finding possibility to have sits on other suitable day....
