Cuypershuis — Attraction in Roermond

Visiting Roermond, this place seemed like a must go. We've been there, asking how long is the tour. The reception was only willing to sell ticket. It was 30 minutes before the closing time, the tour is more than one hour, we were asking to the reception how long is the tour, and still, the reception only wanted to sell ticket.

How long is the visit ? Yes, you can visit. How long is the visit ? Yes, you can visit, the ticket is... [forgotten price] Do we have time to see everything ? If you want to visit, the ticket is.... [forgotten price]

This was the conversation during 10 minutes, when suddenly, by somekind of miracle, the reception says that the museum will close very soon, and we'll have no time for everything....

So, let me ask you something.

Was it me speaking bad English ? Was the employee speaking bad English ? What's the point of selling a ticket as you know that people will have no time for the complete tour ? Are you scammers ?

Because of this, we removed the museum from our to-do list. We also warn people about this place not being 100% honest.

If one day, you become 100% honest, maybe we'll come back. Otherwise, good luck...

Het belang van Pierre Cuypers valt nauwelijks te overschatten. Zeker in het zuiden van Nederland, waar hij vele kerken heeft getekend, is zijn typische stijl nog steeds beeldbepalend.

Dat is-ie echter niet in zijn eigen Cuypershuis.

Er is welgeteld één ruimte die de sfeer van Cuypers nog ademt. Een tweede vertrek heeft een schouw en een origineel (doch ingrijpend gerestaureerd) plafond, maar is verder met hetzelfde grijszwart beklad als alle andere kamers. Streep de trappen en kozijnen even weg en je waant je zo in een minimalistisch kantoorgebouw. De oorspronkelijke functies van de kamers zijn niet te herkennen en worden in de meeste gevallen niet eens vermeld. Dat is prima voor een advocatenbureau, maar zo'n beetje het tegenovergestelde van wat Cuypers zelf zou hebben gewild. Dat is toch geen manier om hem te eren? Het is alsof iemand een discotheek heeft geïnstalleerd in het kasteel van Versailles.

Hoezeer het gebouw ook is mishandeld, de collectie is wel degelijk interessant. Veel van de neogotische kunst die tijdens de Tweede Beeldenstorm is verdwenen, heeft weer een tweede geleven gekregen als museumstuk. Het enorme triomfkruis van de Sint-Servaas past eigenlijk niet in de kamer, maar is daarom niet minder indrukwekkend.

Men zeilt helaas de mist weer in bij de bordjes. Die vallen vaak in herhaling en blijven wel héél erg aan de oppervlakte. We lezen allerlei anekdotes over Cuypers als persoon, maar nauwelijks iets over zijn werkproces nog veel minder over zijn daadwerkelijke oeuvre. Het onbetwijfelde dieptepunt is de ruimte over (niet ín) het atelier, waar pretparkachtige beitelgeluidjes blijkbaar het gat in de informatievoorziening moeten vullen.

Kortom: een tentoonstelling over Cuypers, maar niet het huis van Cuypers - en al helemaal niet zijn werkplaats. Is dat dan die zes euro per persoon waard? Misschien. Maar ik vind eigenlijk dat je dit soort wanbeleid niet met een bezoek...

#29Roermond if your a fan of Cuypers then of course you have to come here. Nice little gift shop and a cafe when you enter. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The building is from Cuypers too (1853). I quiet like the Celtic and medieval motifs in his work and thought I'd see more of that which I didn't, but I did learn a lot about the complete works if Cuypers....
