Some of them had escaped to this city. Others were born and raised here. The majority was carried off from Maliebaan Station. They were executed just because of their Jewish background. We commemorate them with the words of Isaiah 49:16a.

Ruim 1600 mensen zijn in 1942 en 1943 gedeporteerd, slechts 400 van hen keerden terug. Tot 2015 was Utrecht de enige grootstad in Nederland zonder een Joods monument. Het is op 29 oktober 2015 onthuld door burgemeester Jan Van Zanen. Het bestaat uit een 7 meter lange gedenkmuur en een plateau van Jerusalem Gold ( zandsteen dat ook in de klaagmuur is gebruikt ) en een bronzen sjofar ( hoorn die in de Joodse erediensten wordt gebruikt ) op een sokkel. In de gedenkmuur zijn 1239 namen gegraveerd , met geboortedatum , overlijdensplaats en datum van overlijden. In het hart van de muur staat het citaat " Zie, ik heb je in mijn handpalmen gegrift " uit het boek Jesaja. De sjofar , het symbool van hoop, wordt gedragen door 10 Joodse mannen die de Kaddisj ( één van de belangrijkste gebeden van het Jodendom ) lezen. Johan van Oldenbarneveltlaan
