Oude Hortus — Attraction in Utrecht

Brand ofThe old Hortus is not a super big and amazing botanical garden. Actually, if you want to visit the real one, you must go to the Science park. But this has that charm. It's the real old one and it's more like a cute decadent Victorian place ( renovated in a lot of corners) perfect to spend a few hours walking around, having a coffee or a sandwich in the café, or just enjoying the amazing perfume of the roses. One of the curious things to see, it's the old medicinal garden they have inside or a super big Ginkgo biloba. I am a BIG fan of this place! The gardens are beautiful, there is great food at the (slightly expensive) restaurant and the museum is fun (especially for kids). My absolute favourite bit are the greenhouses though - stunning colours, great light, tiny cute plants and nicely warm. In short: this is a really good venue for wedding photos in winter! Give the museum a call in advance and they are happy to receive you any time for photos with no extra fee but the entrance costs. Definite rainy weather wedding photos in Utrecht...

Mooie, diverse tuin. Zowel esthetisch is het een feest om te zijn, maar zeker ook met een biologische of plantgeneeskundige achtergrond (vanwege de geneeskrachtige tuin die ze hebben). De kassen en pindakaasboom (waaraan geen potjes groeien maar waarvan de bladeren naar pindakaas ruiken) zijn de hoogtepunten. In de zomervakantie zijn er extra activiteiten gericht op kinderen. Er staan bij veel planten bordjes met namen, sommigen hebben ook meer informatie (zoals bij een van de oudste Ginko bomen buiten Japan) maar er lijken ook wat te ontbreken. Dat vond ik wel een beetje jammer, en het zou de ervaring in de tuin verdiepen als er meer informatie te lezen was.

Het restaurant is een fijne, rustige plek. Het menu is divers en heeft verschillende vega en vegan gerechten, en een kindermenu. Allergenen staan helder aangegeven. Je kan via QR code op de tafel of binnen aan de kassa eten bestellen. Personeel is attent en vriendelijk, dus een goede plek om even te zitten na het bezoek aan de Oude Hortus...
