The Te Auaunga / Oakley creek area is one of the largest and most developed ecosystems in the urban Auckland area.
There are developed walking and shared bike/walking paths throughout.
The western side of Great North Rd includes the skatepark, playground, pump track, and a pathway along the waterfront through Howlett Reserve.
The eastern side of Great North Rd includes numerous walking paths, community gardens, it neighbors onto the unitec campus grounds.
There is a water hole at the Oakley creek waterfall site which is a popular diving site (at your own risk - caution advised).
The local community collaborate on a range of ecology projects and the area is well kept.
There are historic volcanic rock walls which is a nod to the geological history of the area.
You could spend days exploring this area and still find new things to see and new personalities...
Read moreI visited Oakley Creek a few years ago and enjoyed the place. Nice community garden and walks by the river. Beautiful old trees and birds everywhere. I went there again today and was shocked to see how the place is. It looks more like a post apocalyptic scenery from the Mad Max movie. All buildings around are abandoned, full of gratify, rubbish and rats walking everywhere. The beautiful track by the river is packed with rubbish, plastic, clothes, shoes....many bridges have been washed away by the recent storms and there are debris and logs everywhere. I could not complete the walk because there's no way to cross the river. Mud and broken trees are on the tracks. C'mom we are in mid April...the storms happened in February (?!) Not...
