The Flåm Railway Museum is a charming little gem that offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of one of the world’s most scenic train journeys. Located right in the heart of Flåm, the museum is perfect for a quick visit, especially if you’re interested in the story behind the famous Flåm Railway. The museum houses a collection of vintage trains and equipment, which are beautifully preserved and displayed. As you walk through, you get a real sense of the engineering marvel that the Flåm Railway represents. The exhibits are well-curated, with informative panels that tell the stories of the people who built and operated the railway, as well as the challenges they faced. One of the highlights for me was seeing the old locomotives up close—they’re impressive in their size and craftsmanship. The museum also does a great job of explaining the technical aspects of the railway in an accessible way, making it interesting for both adults and children.

This museum is a true treasue. It's a beautiful, clean space with a free entry for everybody, inviting tourists to step in and explore the history surrounding the creation of the railway, which remains a the main attraction in the area of Flam. It not only delves into the railway's history but also provides insights into the daily life of that era. At the entrance, there's also a souvenir shop where, along with your exploration of the museum, you can indulge in some tax free shopping. It is, indeed true, that it may appear small from the outside, the museum surprises with its spacious interior, featuring the highlight of an old train section at the back. Highly recommended if you're in the area, and just a 10-minute visit can be quite rewarding.

Really nice museum with lots to see inside, as well as a couple of real trains. Lots of historical artifacts pertaining to Flåm Railway - staff uniforms, tools and equipment, photos, historically accurate models of trains. There's even a scale model of the whole railway network in the Flåm area including the museum station itself (which, I believe, was a station earlier), which should be moving, however was inoperational when we visited. The only negative thing I can think of is that there's not enough descriptions. It's often difficult to understand what this or that thing is for. Or maybe I wasn't attentive enough. You'll also find a shop there with merchandise goods.

Enjoyed the history. From the museum website, "The Flåm Railway Museum gives you an insight into the building of one of Europe's steepest railway lines, the technical challenge and the people behind these impressive engineering works. On show in the museum are an authentic El 9 locomotive, an old electric shunting engine, a number of rail inspection trolleys and different exhibitions with text, image, sound and objects. You can also experience a trip on the the Flåm Railway by means of a video presentation. At the museum exit, there is a shop with a broad range of souvenirs and Flåm Railway branded items.".

This little museum and souvenir shop is located right next to the cruise dock and train station. Entrance is free and it’s a good place to occupy some time. During our travels we did not come across too many souvenir shops so we were very happy to be able to load up on our refrigerator magnets, t-shirt, pocketknife, etc. We felt the souvenirs were a tasteful selection and decently well made. The cashier warned us to ensure we place the pocketknife into checked luggage when flying and provided us with the VAT tax refund paperwork and receipt. The museum part is worth a walk through especially since it’s free.
