Read moreWe was looking forward to coming to this place for a quite a while. This is the last big adventure of the year we have done norway and Scandinavia in the summer. We had a full morning until dinner to explore Longyearbyen so we decided to see the museum.
We was greeted with a young lady who said you can just put covers on your shoes no proplem. We adore this idea as the floors stay dry ,clean and no damage from our shoes. I was speaking to the lady all about the area and the history she was a kind friendly lady . Her english was amazing and we all got freaked out as a book went flying across the room on its own . We all laughed about the building must be haunted !!!.
Was wonderful to see all the artifacts, information and history going back to 16th century. There was so much to read and really enjoy we took our time and really appreciate the effort been made for this wonderful town.

Read moreThis is an excellent museum in a fantastic location, the Svalbard Archipelago. DO come here. It was the first time for us to see the midnight Sun at midnight in July the Sun was well above the horizon. We took a boat trip to a glacier falling into the sea and our guide gathered 2,000 year old ice for our drinks of scotch - delicious. The most amazing thing was the almost total absence of snow, unlike the time Michael PALIN came here as he set off on his Pole to Pole odyssey. Our dog-sled trip was taken on sleds with wheels and the huskies had to stop several times to drink - they were over-heating. Of course, this has nothing to do with global-warming, does it? One tip: should you find work here, you do not need a Norwegian work-permit and taxes are lower than on the mainland. Altogether it is a superb destination but do be aware of the risk of polar bear attack - I joke not. You are not allowed to leave the town without packing some serious heat (our dog-sled had a .303 rifle on board) but, should you have not brought your friends: Smith & Wesson or Heckla & Kosch (forget .22 calibers, they will not stop an ijsbear), then there is a gun-shop in town with an impressive array of ordnance! However the crime-rate is...
