5 star review with a 1 star section. So, the Zoo! How exciting, animals and plants of all kinds, forget noah, forget 2 by two, this Zoo is the ultimate feel good day out. Sunshine not garunteed, however, the zoo itself is clean, well organised and well laid out. Lots of 'keepers' (don't know their real job titles) are around and all knowledgeable, we first met joe a 'keeper' up by the huuuuge tortoises. She knew all the names of the animals from the 2017 bbc series the zoo, which is a mocumentary based around the animals at Paignton Zoo! My two god sons (6&4) are really into the show, Joe told us that she knew all the names and that they use different names for the animals for the show, they even made kiondu (a gorilla who is low in the pecking order) the leader of the silver backs because of how tough and grumpy he looks (he is Jurgen in the show, our God sons were especially excited to see him as I'm told his catch phrase is "shut up!" 🙄😂) So, why did we visit? We were there on a camping trip, we had an experience day booked at the zoo for my fiance and her bezzy mate nikster! Lucky devil's were going to feed some giraffe's 👍😊 We had to meet someone at 1 in a hut near the gibbons. So we did, we met Tracy who is an experience coordinator for the giraffes, Tracy is a credit to the Zoo. She was helpful, chatty and insightful, she fielded all the questions from our God sons around the zoo as we walked up to the giraffes, these weren't always about the animals, although most were specifically about 'jurgen' some questions she fielded were also about life in general and she did fantastically she even helped me too, she had a neck fan headset type thingy on and I've been wanting to buy for some time but didn't want to get it when it may be rubbish, turns out she was very happy to let me test it out, she popped it onto medium and let me test it out! Was like a cool hug and intensely satisfying to my heat needs. Tracy was brilliant, she really was, she took the ladies behind a roped area and she was (I'm told) sooo knowledgeable, she was patient and understanding. My fiance who is very hard to please said that the experience was enjoyable and that Tracy was informative! High praise, if you knew her you'd get it! The giraffes were gentle and yet strong and healthy, my fiance says the whole thing was Soooo brilliant she'd recommend anyone do it! Now why would I score any part of it a 1 after what I've said above? Well as afore-mentioned, we had an experience booked, but booking it was the issue in fact it was a headache. We come to Devon camping and so we had a weeks window. My fiance had booked this as a 30th birthday gift for her bestie. But once you buy the experience from buy a gift or whatever then you have to make contact with the Zoo to get it actually secured and booked in! This process started 3 weeks before we left to come to Paignton!! We were either not answered, or we were told the person wasn't there for some reason or another and they'd take a message, pass it on and the person would call back this NEVER HAPPENED! we then decided to drive to the zoo on the Monday after we arrived! My fiance was told it was all booked up until the Friday, luckily we were still here so we booked. We then we're told, oh that's not booked it's just pencilled in, we had to email to state our intention to come on the Friday for the experience... So we did, this was then booked and we received an email with all the ins and outs of what to do that day. Including the fact that there will be some specially reserved parking for us! We arrived in the morning, we see mo who says she knows nothing about the reserved parking, but the email states clearly that we are to tell the attendant we are there for an experience and they will show us to our reserved parking... Everyone, including the experience manager (who was rude) said this wasn't a thing. And then the manager called my fiance to apologise as he was rude and was wrong, there should be parking reserved, luckily the rest of the zoo made up for this poor part.

Ok we went for my daughter's birthday, not my 1st choice for a trip as I don't like the idea of Zoos. But I accept they are a necessary service for the animals and humans alike. There's a walk down from the car park to the entrance to the zoo. I believe however, disabled can drive down and be dropped off. Just remembered to save some energy after a long walk round, to be able to climb the hill to get back to the car park! Although for the most part it's not a difficult walk and quite a pretty pathway. Warning it is expensive to enter, about £26 an adult to walk through the gates. Currently you get a free visit back, if you're still in the area to see more you may have missed. So with the slightly dour start done, let's move on to the fantastic bit... The park is very clean and quite spacious, the food in the restaurant is very good for this type of venue, disabled access is very good overall. Gluten free is just about doable although choices are very limited. So bring your own if allergies are a concern, but catering staff are helpful over such matters. The important thing for me was the animals are looked after very well. There's enough room for them to exercise which is good and sleeping areas are clean. It's good to see the employees attending the animals throughout the day and feeding times are well coordinated. My daughter loves the big cats and they were on show that day, last time they hid away, so don't expect to see every animal. We never saw the rhinos at all, but they must be there somewhere! As with the rest of the zoo the cats were very chilled and seemed relaxed and unstressed, which is a great sign. A testament to the care of the keepers. There are loads of ice cream shops as you walk around and there are a few slopes to climb, so on a hot day and ice cream is a welcome break. There's also a great climbing area for the kids right near an outdoor cafe, a brilliant idea. Young people seemed to love the zoo and adults were overall captivated by the closeness of the animals hence the 5 stars. Apart from the cost of entry, the whole place is well maintained and animals seem content, I guess you get what you pay for. The shop is full of cuddly toys and key rings - great for kids, but not much for adults to take away as a memory. Overall a good day out for a family, if the cost was £15 to enter, then I'd be happier to pay it, as it would represent value for money. Although I guess the animals need their upkeep costs paid and it can't be cheap. Definitely worth a visit, the family enjoyed the trip and walk round and great to see such a wide variety of creatures in a days walkabout. Well done Paignton Zoo!

Awesome time here today! One of the better zoos I've been to. It's obvious that the 'keepers' care very much about the animals and the enclosures are well kept. Lots of building/improvements ongoing in the enclosures while we were there. Lots of different animals to see, I took SO many photos but only shared a few so that if you chose to visit, you can get the full excitement first hand of what is actually there. Lots of food/drink places all around the zoo so that you can take a break during your trip. Quite pricey! - we paid £1.80 per can of coke, £3.30 for a magnum ice-cream, £2 for a small sausage roll, £1.50 for a packet of crisps... Hot food such as hotdogs/burgers etc were not available on alot of the stalls while we were there, i think it said on signs due to staff shortages. There was plenty of choice but I'd advise taking your own food if you don't want to spend a small fortune. We went with children - aged 3 and 11 - so it was a little disappointing that all children play areas were closed, not sure the reason why, but we still had a great time nevertheless. We arrived about 11am and didn't leave until approximately 3.30pm so it takes a good amount of time to go around the whole zoo - and that was only taking a few 5/10 breaks to sit. Weather can't be helped and it did rain about 60% of the time we were there but there is plenty of sheltered areas to take cover if you choose. We had a pushchair with us and saw lots of people in wheelchairs (in all parts of the zoo) so it is accessible but there are hilled areas which might be a struggle for some. The gift shop was as expected, pricey but a good range of items. Something we loved..there was plastic pushchairs (single AND double) that were available to hire (from £8 if I remember correctly). All in all, brilliant experience, facilities were great, staff was great. Highly recommend visiting if you are in the area!

It was an enjoyable day out for the family. We purchased 2 of the 1 free child with every Adult type ticket. We arrived 15 mins before opening time and was directed to the overflow car park as it was already busy. The staff directing parking were good. We queued for 10 mins before the park opened along with at least 100 other people and the queue took about another 10 mins to get through reception. All the park maps are online unless you purchase a guide but the quality of the map online was very poor and could do with improvement. The signage around the zoo was not very clear and didn’t help the flow round the zoo well. Even looking at the map didn’t help and we ended up going back and forth a few times round the place. Also the information signs round the animals enclosures were very minimal with not enough information in our opinion. We stopped for lunch at the main restaurant, the food was tasty, well priced and a great portion size. The ordering process could do with being a bit more streamlined as there was a major bottleneck at the poor 1 staff member serving the hot food. The buzzer for the when the Panini’s were ready was a great idea though to save queuing. Unfortunately the day we visited all the play parks and indoor soft play were closed due to ‘Operational Issues’. This was a big disappointment as 99% of parents will tell you it’s great to stop for a break and let the kids have a run around wherever you are. And we are a bit disappointed that the Giraffe house was closed but we’re very pleased to see them out in the outside space. The Tropical house was great and you can easily spend 4-5 hours if not the whole day at the zoo. I’m summary, a good day out with the family, we would go again. Get there early and get parked to save the queuing/parking stress before the day begins.

Great Zoo! My disabled wife, teenage son , teenage daughter and I visited the zoo on 23rd October and discovered Paignton Zoo really cares about their animals and their customers. We booked tickets online as requested and arrived at 12.30pm there was plenty of free parking but be advised the Zoo is on the side of a steep valley which if you have a self propelled wheelchair, like us, is going to be challenge. When booking online and providing you supply proof, one carer can be submitted free of charge, which I thought very generous. We entered the Zoo and discovered really helpful staff who offered us the opportunity to rent an off-road electric scooter for just £20 for the duration of our visit. We also had to pay a £20 deposit which would be refunded when we returned the scooter undamaged. We were in two minds whether to take this offer but this turned out to be a great investment as the hills were steep and the paths were long. They also provided us with a map marking out the routes and attractions available via scooter or buggies. There was a real focus on making disabled customers and families with buggies/prams welcome in all areas of the zoo. Toilets and refreshment stalls were dotted around the zoo keeping kids happy and the animals and attractions were accessible for all to see. Even though maintenance was taking place all animals were accessible, bar the giraffes. Apparently, they had a wild time the night previous and just couldn't face dealing with the public with hangovers.. we've all been there! The zoo wasn't over crowded, there was no waiting in-line for anything even though it was quite busy. Food was lovely and we all had a really good time. We would definitely recommend a visit and don't forget to leave a donation as they get no financial support from the Government.

✨️Have to say slightly disappointed with our visit on a Saturday. Have been a few times before pre covid era and have been an amazing thoroughly enjoyable day, but unfortunately, this day was not one of them. 😕First off, the park looks like it's under some sort of renovation? With enclosures empty and overgrown and parts closed off to members of the public, it felt it was a little bit worse for wear. Bear in mind that there are no notices or anything up on social media we could see when booking, so expect not to see the full animal experience. Secondly, paying £45 for 2 adults seemed absolutely ridiculous considering the extent of how much the park was closed and / or empty. I understand they have to make money, but seriously? I would seriously think before paying this amount for what you actually experience. And thirdly, back to another money moan, but again, do they really need to have such expensive drinks? We came pre prepared with our lunch but fancied 2 cans of drink and an ice cream magnum which came to the costly sum of 9 pounds ?! I really wouldn't bother next time 😕 again. I know they have to make money, but seriously?! Anyway, moving on to some more positives, it was a lovely sunny day,the animals we did see looked very well maintained and happy. The staff we encountered were really friendly and the places which were open were kept very clean and tidy. We especially enjoyed the cat (photo below), who lives nearby and treats the area around the restaurant and the upper bit of the zoo as his playground ! 😀 🐈⬛️Overall, we did really enjoy ourselves. However, disappointed with the amount closed off and empty enclosure signs, especially with how much a ticket costs ! I think we will leave it another couple of years until we go back 🦓🦒🦍🦎
