This is the Diocesan Shrine and Parish Church of Our Lady of the Abandoned, the Patroness of Marikina. This Roman Catholic edifice is big, historical, amazing architectural aesthetics. Nonetheless, the church building has already been renovated, refurbished, redesigned a number of times, and the old historical touches are somewhat gone, leaving only the church plaque at the entrance to witness to its humble and solemn origins. What it lacks is a working digital projection system, in order to assist the Catholic faithful to become more active in liturgical participation. Read moreRight across the street from the Marikina Shoe Museum is the old Marikina Church called Our Lady of the Abandoned Parish. It stood massively with the cars, trikes, cabs rushes by in the small streets surrounding it. We decided to check it out and see its architectural uniqueness and appreciate it alongside the its history.
The parish is Baroque in style characterized by a heavily fortified facade, large-scale ceiling paintings, and a dramatic central projection of the facade. It is well maintained from its columns, ceiling paintings, pulpits, and intricately designed altar.
The church suffered major damages during the tumultuous years of the Philippine–American War in the early 1900s. Read moreThis is one of the oldest churches in Marikina being built in the 1700's by the Augustinians. The church is where Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados resides, the Patron Saint of Marikina City. Unforunately, it didn't survive 2 major earthquakes and so the current church is a rebuild.
It's located near Bayan along JP Rizal St. in Sta Elena. Despite it's location, it's locally also referred to as the San Roque church. It is also a popular church for weddings.
There's ample parking inside and during Sunday mass, cars are allowed to park around the streets surrounding the church.
