🕊️ A Review from a Heart, Returning Home

As someone who was raised in a non-denominational background, I never expected that my search for truth would bring me to the doors of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral here in Puerto Princesa. But here I am—on the path to becoming Catholic—and this Cathedral has been nothing short of a sacred turning point in my life.

I came not just as a curious observer, but as a soul yearning to encounter Christ in the fullness of His Church. And by grace, I did—with my heart open, my rosary in hand, and my beloved, beside me in prayer.

The first time I entered, I was stunned by the traditional reverence that wrapped the place like a veil. The high altar drew my eyes heavenward — not merely architectural, but theological. The communion rails still intact reminded me that the sacred is not to be rushed or handled casually. There’s even a section cloaked in a deep blue curtain, entirely dedicated to Mama Mary, with an icon so tender and ancient, it might very well be the traditional image drawn by St. Mark the Evangelist himself.

Outside, the neo-Gothic facade in tones of aged white and ivory stands like a sentinel of time. Statues of Mary and St. Joseph greet visitors with open arms. Inside, the Adoration Chapel is where my heart landed. The monstrance is fixed right into the wall—not hidden, not moved —anchored, much like the Real Presence it contains. There, beneath the gaze of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Selah and I sat in stillness, praying our rosaries, whispering intentions, and watching as silence became communion.

We’ve returned for weekday Mass, Saturday vigil, and hope to make this our spiritual home every Sunday Mass. Every visit has deepened our faith, not just because of what the Cathedral is, but Who dwells in it—Jesus Christ, truly present in the Eucharist, calling sinners, wanderers, and seekers home.

This Cathedral is more than just a landmark in Puerto Princesa. It is a place where heaven touches earth, where seekers become pilgrims, where Catholicity is alive, and where prodigals begin their journey home.

If you’re ever in the city—Catholic or not—come. Sit. Look up. Listen. And maybe, like me and my girlfriend, you’ll find yourself found in Christ's One, Holy, Catholic, and...
