The Palawan Special Battalion WW-II Memorial Museum in Rizal Avenue, Puerto Princesa is a hidden gem for history lovers, now under new management that continues to preserve and showcase artifacts from World War II and beyond. The museum features an impressive collection of military equipment, uniforms, historical photos, and memorabilia, telling the stories of Filipino and American heroism during the war.
One unique highlight is the vintage Buick car displayed at the memorial behind the museum, adding to the historical atmosphere. The café at the entrance also provides a nice touch, making it a convenient stop for visitors.
What I Loved:
✔️ Extensive collection of wartime artifacts – including weapons, uniforms, and rare photographs showcasing Palawan’s role in WWII. ✔️ Rich historical significance – with displays featuring Manuel Quezon, Douglas MacArthur, and the sacrifices of Filipino and American soldiers. ✔️ Preserving and curating these historical pieces despite limited resources.
Room for Improvement:
🔹 Better air-conditioning – would help preserve historical items and photographs, preventing further degradation. 🔹 Photo restoration – some images are fading, and government support could help in their preservation. 🔹 More interactive features – a documentary video about Palawan’s WWII history, Plaza Cuartel, and the massacre would enhance the visitor experience. 🔹 Clearer curation – while the exhibits are well-organized, some items, like Imelda Marcos’ shoe, feel out of place without additional context.
Final Thoughts
Despite a few areas for improvement, the Veterans Memorial Museum is an invaluable place to learn about the history and heroism of Palawan. Walking through the exhibits, I could feel both the sadness of lives lost and the gratitude for their sacrifices. I highly recommend this museum to both locals and tourists—it deserves more visitors and support to keep these important...
