Hidden Grace in the City: A Visit to the Real Monasterio de Santa Clara de Manila
Tucked away along Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City, right in the middle of busy traffic and modern city life, there’s a quiet place that feels like a breath of calm air—Real Monasterio de Santa Clara de Manila. For many people, this isn’t just a church. It’s a destination for deep prayer, heartfelt wishes, and silent hope.
What Makes It Unique?
The first thing that makes Santa Clara truly special is that it’s not your typical church where Mass is regularly held for the public. Instead, it’s a monastery—a sacred space where Poor Clare nuns live a life of silence, prayer, and devotion. These cloistered sisters stay behind the scenes, but their presence is deeply felt through the peaceful energy that fills the entire place.
And of course, if you’ve ever heard of offering eggs for good weather, this is the church behind that tradition! People come here bringing trays of eggs—yes, real eggs—to pray for clear skies, especially before weddings, special events, or even travel. The practice is rooted in the belief that St. Clare, known for her pure faith and spiritual power, can intercede for calm weather. It’s a beautiful mix of faith, Filipino tradition, and quiet charm.
A Place of Silent Wishes
When you visit, you’ll see a long, quiet pathway lined with candles and flower offerings. There’s a glass window where you can catch a glimpse of the chapel inside, but the real beauty lies in the way people walk up, leave their intentions, whisper a prayer, and light a candle. It’s not loud, not grand—but it feels genuinely sacred.
You don’t need to be deeply religious to appreciate what Santa Clara offers. Whether you’re carrying a heavy heart, a quiet dream, or simply want a moment of peace, this place welcomes you—no judgment, no fanfare, just you and your intentions.
Final Thoughts
In a city that never stops moving, Real Monasterio de Santa Clara de Manila reminds us that stillness can be powerful. That simplicity can be sacred. And that even in the middle of chaos, there are places where our quiet prayers are heard.
So the next time you’re around Katipunan, take a detour. Bring your prayers, maybe a tray of eggs, and step into this little haven of hope. You might not hear the nuns sing, but you’ll definitely feel the peace they’ve been praying...
Read moreAll this time I studied and stayed in UP Diliman I was not aware that there is this monastery nearby where you can attend Mass and pray for your wishes. I just heard it from my brother who heard it from his girlfriend.
We went there from QC Memorial Circle by GrabShare but this is easily accessible by jeep from Cubao. When we arrived, me and my brother bought eggs as offering near the entrance of the church, where the cutie cat was located. The eggs were originally priced at ₱60 each but since we bought six bundles we got it with a discount (it was sold to us at ₱50/bundle). They were color coordinated depending on what you're praying for. Red is for travel and finances, blue for board exams, pink for love and family, orange for business, yellow for thanksgiving. It's not required to have it color coordinated though. I saw some people donating a whole tray of eggs without the plastic wrapper. Eco-friendly, actually.
Once you're inside the church area, they provide the pencils and paper you can use to write your thoughts and prayers. There's ample tables and seats provided too so you're comfortable writing. Once done, you go inside the prayer room where you give first your offerings to an attendant then you pray. There's a dropbox requesting people to provide their names and addresses in case they had answered prayers. Not a requirement but I think it helps price the miracles of the monastery's founder.
We attended the 5:30pm mass and it was not crowded at all, which is nice because we were expecting it was since it was a Sunday. It was very arid but thanks to large fans, I felt comfortable...
Read moreLast Sept. 15, 2019, me and four of my friends went to Monasterio Real de Sta. Clara de Manila at Katipunan. We rode the LRT 2 to Katipunan station. We walked towards the road crossing and the flyover. We reached the monastery after few minutes of walk from the train station. You should walk below the flyover and you will immediately see the monastery.
Outside the monastery were egg vendors selling half a dozen for 50pesos. The egg wrappers come with different colors for different intentions. We bought blue for board exam intention. Pink for love. And many other colors. Other people would offer other food items like banana.
There is a statue of St. Claire where you can pray and offer sampaguita flowers. The eggs and other offerings must be brought to the monastery further inside the grounds. Before offering the eggs, you can write your prayers and intentions in a paper they provide. Pencils are also provided. Put your letters inside the petition box and give the eggs to the lady who will receive it.
You can also kiss the relic of St. Claire and touch the images of Saints inside the reception area.
The place is so serene and peaceful. I love how accessible it is. I can easily come back and attend masses whenever I want because it is so near to the train station and jeepney stops.
I think the mass every sunday is at...
