I stumbled upon the Simboryo while looking for historical landmarks in Taguig. It’s not a typical tourist spot — in fact, there’s a security guard who will ask your purpose of visit since it’s inside the old cemetery. (Confession: I just said I was visiting someone, when in truth I only wanted to see this old dome-shaped chapel 😅).
The structure itself is fascinating. Built back in the 1700s during the Spanish colonial era, the Simborio served as a chapel and ossuary for the cemetery. You’ll notice its dome covered in moss, stone walls, and old balustrades — all showing its age and history. Some say there are even stories of tunnels linking it to the old Sta. Ana church, though that’s more of a local legend.
When I visited, there were locals hanging out nearby, so it felt a bit awkward to look too amazed like a tourist — but that’s part of the charm of exploring places not usually on the mainstream list.
