Portugal was long planned for fall in 2020 but as you all know, it had to be cancelled like most other trips of that year! Fast forward to winter 2022, when we could finally reschedule our vacation and oh boy.. it was the best decision for our holidays! 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥? ✦ Portugal experiences a Mediterranean climate which is why it generally has mild to warm winters. ✦ The average high temperature rises up to 15-18°C (59-65F) during the daytime. Costa Nova do Prado is the beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in the Portuguese town of Aveiro. Continuously swept by the wind and washed by a rough sea, it is a place much appreciated by lovers of sailing and windsurfing. These houses, called "Palheiros", are the typical buildings of this region, once used by fishermen for shelter or to store their fishing equipment. The material used for construction was simple straw and reeds. In the beginning the huts were arranged on a single floor, raised on stilts directly on the sand with wooden rods arranged horizontally. Over time, the bases on which they were built were eliminated, thus transforming them into real homes.

Towards the mid-nineteenth century, Costa Nova became a very popular seaside resort and the fishermen, who were very poor, began to rent their palheiros during the summer season. To make them more appealing to tourists, they decided to paint the external facades with bright colours, taking as a reference the colors of the Moliceiros, the typical boats traditionally used by the fishermen of the Ria. Today the seafront of this enchanting village with its striped houses gives the sensation of being inside an old postcard with a particularly...
