What a great surprise! We went there being a bit confused by the short opening time (14:30-15.30??) and arrived shortly past 14:30 to find out that there was actually a 1h guided tour, that started at 14:30. Typically there are 3 tours a day, but they were short staffed, hence the rather short opening-time. I have attached a picture of the opening times (which are guided tours of one hour each).
Anyhow - despite us being late, we were invited to join and could pay the 2,50€ per person afterwards. This was such a great tour with so much information that was delivered. Absolutely amazing. We've paid more to receive less in other museums - they also have footage of the Capelinhos volcano which you cannot find in other museums - not even the volcano museum right at Capelinhos volcano.
Highly recommend coming...
Read moreWe stopped in here at 4:15pm. The man (I'm so sorry I can't remember your name!) working there was finishing up a tour and said that the next tour was at 4:30pm. My wife and I were the only ones on the tour and we could immediately tell that he loved what he does, is insanely knowledgable about volcanoes and the formation of Sao Miguel, and that he really gets excited teaching people about it. Though we were the last tour at the end of the day and there were only two of us, he didn't rush at all, he explained everything in immense detail, and the thing I love the most, he used our names throughout the tour. An intentional effort that goes a long...
Read moreI came here for hiking but did not expect much popular science tourism. It was closed on a Sunday, national holiday and repairs but I was persistent and on the fourth day managed to get in.
I did not manage to see many rocks but thanks to generous host I took time to sample the maps and cards. I found a terribly well-written hardcover book to buy. However, I did not have cash to buy it. Returned weeks later after trip to another island and, again, returned in vain because it was "open" in Google maps and closed in practice. Could not buy the book, again.
Thanks for the hosts and good luck with technical problems as well...
