Don't overlook this museum now that most of the paleontological exhibits are displayed in the museum attached to DinoParque! This town museum still has a lot to offer. There's a carefully curated display of ethnology and traditional trades of the area, with a lovely little recreation of a traditional village house that you can walk through. A small collection of archaeological artefacts puts the longer past into perspective, but the highlights are still the fossil remains and the very informative displays on the palaeontology of Portugal, and this fossil-rich area in particular. While many of the larger mounted skeletons and exciting fossils are now on display in the recently opened museum as part of the DinoParque, there is still lots here to hold your interest: particularly a preserved nest containing Jurassic-era dinosaur eggs (see more in the other museum!) and some beautiful dinosaur footcasts and prints. If you are really interested and they're not too busy, you might even be invited to have a quick look in the attached lab where palaeontologists are cleaning and treating fossils excavated in the region. New this year is the beautifully planted 'Jurassic garden' in the courtyard with tree ferns, cycads, horsetails and ginko trees!
We've been coming to this small but wonderful museum for about 7 years now, as my son is very enthused about palaeontology and is looking forward to volunteering here when he's old enough. We always feel happy after our annual visit! Thank you for...
Read moreI am very demanding with my reviews, and I don't give five stars away for little. I have visited some of the top natural history museums on earth, and I have to say this about Lourinhã Museum : it is a modest and tiny museum, but the information displayed is very accurate and complete, and one can tell those in charge pride themselves in keeping it as complete as possible, and updated with the pace of research. Given the available space for the exhibit, the curators have done a fine job of taking you on a temporal journey through the vast history of the local and global region, from some of the first local vertebrate fossils to the old ways of living in rural countryside of Portugal . I only wish I had visited sooner. If you are a science buff, yes, it is well-worth the journey from the capital to this small city to support their efforst to divulge the scientific...
