The foundation commissioned the museum, the surrounding gardens, and also transformed the Casa into an exhibition space. Be sure to check the museum’s website in advance for current exhibitions. Usually and because of the amazingly big space there are numerous temporary exhibitions. That way, you’ll know if you also want to visit the Casa ( Serralves House) and the Manoel de Oliveira Cinema House. During my visit, I saw a mind-blowing Gagosian-curated exhibition of Maurizio Cattelan in the Serralves Casa and it blew my mind. I was deeply impressed by the art, the surroundings, and the immense scale of this place dedicated to contemporary creativity. The park itself is magnificent, covering 18 hectares. Upon entering, you’ll receive a leaflet with suggested routes through the gardens, including detailed descriptions of each area. There’s even a unique opportunity to walk through the treetops on a suspended path—highly recommended. There are hidden corners, cozy benches, and an incredibly romantic atmosphere. I genuinely felt like I had stepped into a secret garden, full of beautiful little nooks everywhere. If you're visiting with a loved one, don't skip the park. It’s so beautiful, and the hidden spots are so enchanting, you might find yourselves feeling like teenagers again -sneaking kisses on benches under the bougainvillea canopies, near the sculptures and fountains. The tea house near the tennis court is also a hidden gem and they had a really good chocolate cake.

The amazing Art Deco house was the (pink) icing on the cake following our visit to the Museo of Contemporary Art, and the Cattelan exhibition was a complete surprise! We also really enjoyed wandering through the gardens and spotting the sculpures on the trail. However, the downside was that we couldn't access a large part of the gardens as they were closed for a private wedding 😐. Visitors were required to exit via one gate, and enter via a gate further down in order to visit the pink house. The tea shop was also closed, which meant that we had to exit Serralves completely in order to get some refreshments, as my husband had bought a ticket for the garden only and couldn't visit the art gallery cafes. We didn't feel that visitors were treated very well today, especially as we were still charged the full ticket price!

We have been at the park, the museum, the cinema and the villa. We would say…it’s ok, but not to compare with the Gaudi Park in Barcelona for example. The ticket is valid for the whole day and it is able to enter and leave the park, which is necessary due to no vending machines, just one Restaurant. So we expected to have several places with a bar to enjoy the Sun, and a porto tonics. Other than that, the museum, villa and cinema was a little boring for us, due to the too much art, and no explanation in English, to even try to understand what we extra pay For. So for a family trip we would not recommend it, it will be boring for the kids…and we felt boring as well, due to less attraction and not even the option to get some drinks to sit on the grass and enjoy the scenery.

Fundação Serralves, located in Porto, is a cultural haven that seamlessly blends contemporary art, architecture, and nature. Established in 1989, this renowned foundation encompasses the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, the Villa Serralves, and the stunning Serralves Park, making it a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a unique cultural experience.

Designed by the acclaimed Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art is the centerpiece of the Fundação Serralves. The museum’s minimalist and modern design, characterized by clean lines and expansive spaces, provides a perfect backdrop for its extensive collection of contemporary art. The museum showcases a dynamic array of temporary exhibitions by both Portuguese and international artists, reflecting the latest trends and developments in contemporary art.

The museum’s commitment to innovation and diversity is evident in its programming, which includes not only visual arts but also performance art, film screenings, and educational workshops. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that there is always something new and exciting for visitors to experience.

Adjacent to the museum is the Villa Serralves, a stunning Art Deco mansion that adds historical depth to the foundation. Built in the 1930s, the villa’s elegant architecture and meticulously preserved interiors offer a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of its original owners. The villa itself is an architectural masterpiece, with its sleek lines, luxurious materials, and harmonious proportions reflecting the sophistication of the Art Deco style.

Inside, visitors can explore a variety of rooms adorned with period furnishings and artworks. The villa also hosts temporary exhibitions and special events, adding a historical and cultural layer to the Serralves experience.

Spanning over 18 hectares, Serralves Park is a lush, green oasis that provides a serene contrast to the contemporary and historical architecture of the museum and villa. The park, designed by landscape architect Jacques Gréber, features a harmonious blend of formal gardens, wooded areas, and open meadows. Its design encourages leisurely strolls and moments of contemplation amidst the beauty of nature.

Throughout the year, Serralves Park hosts a variety of outdoor events, including music concerts, festivals, and educational programs. These events draw visitors of all ages and interests, making the park a vibrant and dynamic part of the Serralves experience.

Fundação Serralves places a strong emphasis on education and community engagement. The foundation offers a wide range of educational programs, including workshops, guided tours, and lectures, aimed at fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of contemporary art and environmental sustainability. These programs cater to diverse audiences, from school children to adults, ensuring that everyone can engage with and benefit from the foundation’s resources.

No visit to Fundação Serralves is complete without a stop at the on-site café and shop. The café offers a delightful selection of refreshments and light meals, perfect for enjoying a relaxing break amidst the cultural exploration. The shop, on the other hand, features a curated selection of art books, prints, and unique souvenirs, allowing visitors to take a piece of the Serralves experience home with them.

Fundação Serralves is more than just a museum; it is a cultural epicenter that celebrates the intersection of art, nature, and architecture. Its diverse offerings, from cutting-edge contemporary art exhibitions to the tranquility of its expansive park, provide a rich and multifaceted experience that caters to a wide range of interests. Whether you are an art aficionado, a history buff, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Fundação Serralves promises an enriching and...

Requires a half day to visit this multi-venue site. The contemporary art museum had an impacting and fascinating section on children's games across centuries and societies. Very thought provoking. All children play the same simple games no matter where and when in the world. Nice bar for coffee on basement level. The Art deco former home of President Soares was lovely to see as is the water feature in front, so very art nouveau. His life's story is very poigant given current geopolitical times. Soares support of contemporary/modern art through all he endured is impressive. Nice display of Miro paintings related to children's poetry upstairs. The surrounding gardens with tree-top walk-way and animal farm are very reposing. Many shrubs already in flower mid-February. Last building to visit contained the film museum which is currently honoring the French cinema producer Jean Luc Godard. Many of the rewards he received ( Palme d'Or from Cannes, etc)...
