Het Cabanas strand is net als Cabanas zelf overigens een plek voor mensen die van absolute rust houden, de huidige ´telefoon´ jongere zou er knettergek worden, denk ik zelf. Er ligt vanwege die oneindige rust ook verbazingwekkend weinig afval op het strand ( ook te danken aan de 100 afvalbakken natuurlijk, zie de foto's...) en dit ondanks toch de relatieve nabijheid van de toeristische bolwerken van Monte Gordo aan de oostkant en de ´feest-algarve´ aan de westkant. Aan de branding kun je door met je tenen in het zand te wroeten op die van de autochtonen afgekeken manier nog aardig snel een flink conservenblikje vol met kokkels bij elkaar ´vissen´. De zee zelf ter plaatse is echter vrijwel leeggevist zoals bijna overal rond Europa. Eenmaal ging ik met een bootje tegen betaling uit vissen op zo´n drie kilometer uit de kust precies tegenover het Praia de Cabanas. Urenlang bewogen onze hengeltoppen slechts naar de deining van de zee om ons heen. Achter het strand ligt de monding van een rivier waar je overheen moet steken om uberhaupt bij het strand te kunnen komen. Het water daar is wél helder en blijkbaar voedzaam want daar zwemmen in tegenstelling tot in zee aardige scholen met die typisch Europese vis die je in vrijwel elke haven daar ziet rondzwemmen, de Harder. Het is ondanks alles wel de beste plek om oesters te verzamelen die ik in het zuiden van Europa ken. Je loopt het slik in en plukt ze dan gewoon van de ´banken´, Chinese oesters net als in Den Oever, dat dan weer wel ... We had a fantastic day at the beach, we went outside of UK school holidays, and on a week day so there wasn’t many people on the beach, but to hire four sun beds with two umbrellas was under €40 which wasn’t too bad. There is a part of the beach where you don’t have to hire sun beds as well. We had a good day and it’s about a 5 minute walk from the boat pier with raised walk ways and wooden walk ways on the beach.
